Question

Hello all.

If I have posted this wrong I apologise......... I am in Western Australia and have only just found this forum. I am totally at sea with my mp3 NWHD5. Previously I have had no problems to speak of with this machine. June last year my old computer with xp windows crashed and so I bought a new one with vista.

I transferred all music files to my new computer but now I have removed all files from my mp3 and tried to load more new files on.

They load no problems but I then get the words CANNOT PLAY TRACK ON THIS DEVICE. Please why is this happening.

At first I thought it was because it was 64kbps.......then I thought it was only the atrac files. Most of my files are mp3. I have tried everything.

Sorry not a dumb female but one just a little bit older than probably most of you and not up with all this latest technology.

Is it because my files have transferred from another computer. There was no way to be able to use the authorisation option on my sonicstage version 4.3.

Please what am I doing wrong. We can no longer listen to our music while riding our bikes. Any help would be most appreciated.

The early Sony Hard Disk players were heavily into copy protection. Chances are that the files on your HD5 were put on with copy protection that was designed to keep you from moving the files to another computer and using them from there. To use multiple computers with the same device you needed to register with the Sony Connect service. You could then register up to 5 computers that you could freely move your songs to and from with the same device. If your original XP computer was registered, you should register the new computer to your account, if not I don't think there is an easy solution. The latest version of Sonic stage allows you to eliminate copy protections from songs as you take them from CD. You should make sure you select that option for the future. In the short run, if you weren't registerecd with Connect you would have to reimport the files from CD. Wish I had a better option for you.

I should add that unless you had a connect account, the HD5 will only play files from one computer. To play files from your Vista computer you have to reinitialize the HD5 in SonicStage (which reerases all files on the HD5) so that it becomes mated (for life) to that computer. Go ahead and get a Connect account so that you can avoid this problem again.
