Ken.Horton
My MDS-JB940 records and plays back OK, but when I eject the disc and re-insert it, I discover it has been completely erased. Also, if I insert any previously recorded discs and make any kind of 'edit' on them, even a single new track mark, it does the same thing-erases the whole disc when it is ejected from the deck! BIG BUMMER! Sony Service in Irvine wants $146 to do anything on the deck-I'm questioning if it's even worth this to get my deck repaired. Does anyone out there have a clue about what might be malfunctioning on my deck, and how I might repair it myself? (I'm an 'Engineering' guy myself.) Does anyone out there know of any competent independent minidisc repair people?
Be_True
Is it just not updating the TOC file on the MD? With my sony MZ-N505, every time I want to eject a MD after a change, I always press stop twice -- even if it is already stopped -- many times it will flash EDIT - this is when it updates the TOC on the MD. Your player may be different, but it's worth a try. ;-) Chris
me
Recording head is misaligned, or dead. I'd repair it, if I was you. It's a nice deck!
Guest Anonymous
oh my god this exact thing keeps happening to my Sony MZR900! i think it's because i kept dropping mine. then one day, there it won't record properly anymore. i mean it records fine, but when you take the disc out and put it back, it says "blank disc". arghh, it's so frustrating! and yes, when i tried to edit an MD i had w/ 3 albums in it, it deleted everything in it! someone said that the heads should be realigned? how do i do that? anyway, i'm sure it got disaligned from excessive dropping. good day. me
How do you align the record head? Take it to Sony's service centre. Undoubtably it was from dropping the unit too much.
gem
i wonder if there's any way of re-aligning the heads myself.... =)
me
Not really. It might even be broken. At any rate trying to fix it without the proper tools will surely bust it further You would have to take the lid off to do any serious work, which is a mission in itself.. Mystyler
A Yamaha deck on Minidisc-T had the same problem - I'll see what I can come up with.

zephonith
Go to http://www.physics.adelaide.edu.au/~jwoithe/minidisc/ The guy at that site had exactly the same problem with his deck (a different model) and the site details what steps he went through to repair it. I think it's a good read for anyone who's having similar problems with their MD unit.
Guest Anonymous
I've suddenly started getting this problem with my MDS-JB940 deck, too. And it only seems to happen when I've been recording on a whole blank disc, so I don't think it has anything to do with the Record Head being mis-aligned. It looks like a rogue TOC is being created when the disc is ejected at the end of the session. I'm going to take mine for repair soon if the problem persists - it's too good a machine to abandon.
