Guest Anonymous
Hello everyone! I just received my N10 and remember some posts here about the supplied AC adaptor (100V AC to 6V DC 500mA) not being compatible with US voltages. Can anyone recommend an exact model number AC adaptor from Radio Shack or any other company that you are using with your Japanese N10. Your help is much appreciated! Bazirker
That's not quite how it works. What you do is look at the electrical needs of the MD unit and then buy an adaptor that can supply that voltage. Next, you buy the appropriate plug that fits into the MD unit. Now you don't really look for the serial number or whatever at radio shack...ask a guy there for a universal adaptor and just buy one that can supply the voltage. I THINK the plug you need is plug B, although I don't have an MZ-N10 and I dunno if the adaptor is the same, plus I bought mine a looooong time ago and my memory is sorta fuzzy. I got my adaptor for $12.99. The plug should be like $2 or something, if that much.
Guest Anonymous
Bazirker ... thanks for the reply! Maybe I should rephrase my question. For those who bought an AC adaptor for your N10, which one did you buy? Where did you buy it and what is the model number of the adaptor. I've heard different stories about using the supplied japanese ac adaptor here in the US. Some say not to use it because it will/might fry your MD player. Over at minidisco under their FAQs www.minidisco.com/minipages/japanese.html they say that you can use the japanese ac adaptor here in the US with no problem. N10 owners ... please help! Guest Anonymous
Hi, I had the MZ-N10 for a while now. I use Recoton Universal AC Adapter 500ma. THere's one with 300ma and 500ma. Use 500ma. It works fine in North America
Leland
In theory, you do need to ensure at minimum the 500 milliamp spec to keep the adapter from overheating. Probably overkill, but that is the principal. (V=I*R). For the record, I have used Japanese adapters in the US with no ill effect, but I have also bought 100-240 V capable ones to travel with (Sony makes some compact ones in various different voltages), so eventually I was covered. I think the unit will detect the excess voltage and warn you if it is a problem. Sony started adding this feature several years ago. The error message is "Hi DC in". That should give you some comfort in using the supplied Japanese adapter. Of course, only you can determine how risk tolerant you want to be. Bazirker
Leland, I think you actually don't have to worry about current, do you? Cause V=I*R, I should be detirmed by the resistance of the circuitry in the recorder and the voltage of the adaptor, right? I'm not sure how that works, but I always thought that's how it went... Mystyler
Leland is spot on - I asked the question months ago in physics and got a similar answer, albeit more technical. I cannot remember the specifics, but it is also safe to use a higher rated power brick. I've used a 900mAh adapter and all is good. 500mAh is "nominal" power supply.
me
I've got a 1A adapter sitting 'ere for my DR7.
Mystyler
1A or 1Ah?
me
5-23v, 1A. Why for the amp hours?
Leland
As I understand it, you have to look at the adapter as a kind of resistor that reduces the voltage. It is rated to handle a certain amount of amperage. If you overload it, it will overheat (sounds like resistance, right). Say you double the voltage. If the resistance is basically constant, then the current is doubled. If the design is not capable of handling that much current, it causes a problem. Anyway, my limited, laymans understanding. I melted one once. Really melted. Luckily I was around and could smell it before it caught fire. I was doing something extreme though. I am overdriving an adapter at the moment for my wireless ethernet router/switch. It works fine. Just a little warm.
Guest Anonymous
the ac adptor that comes with the n-10 works in north american outlets as is (no additional adapters required). i have used it for like one month now
Guest Anonymous
Thank you everyone for your replies! I used the 100V japanese adaptor that came with it and it works just as you said. Man, I love this N10! Thanks again everyone! Dave

Leland
Hey, Dave. Tell everyone how cool the N10 is! I got mine FIRST!!! (because I live in Tokyo) People need to appreciate how cool this unit is. The ergonomics are superlative. I though the R900 was the ultimate. I was even happy to sit out one years new product cycle. Then I discovered NetMD. Now, I think the N10 is the penultimate. (Just in case. Since I was wrong the last time, I want to hedge my bets)
me
I'm willing to bet the DR7 layout betters that of the N10
Guest Anonymous
Yes, the new N10 is really wonderful! I just recorded a CD to MD ... here are the details. I used Sonic Stage V1.5 and recorded in LP2 mode and it took about 7 minutes to record one CD to MD. I also used a USB 2.O port on my computer. Recording in realtime on my old Mz-R37 would have taken 1 hour 8 minutes, not to mention that I was able to get 3 CDs onto one MD in LP2 mode. Incredible! The sound is very good using Sony EX70 earbuds and the equalizer in the N10. Well worth the money! Dave
