low output of fairly expensive new MD recorders

Saw this on MD community page news:

AVLand (UK) has the Sony MZ-R410, MZ-N510, and MZ-N710 in stock. The Euro edition of the last two have reduced power, 2.5mW and 1.2mW(!) headphone amplifiers.

2.5mw and 1.2mw seems an incredibly low output for two fairly expensive players, don'tcha think? :shock:

I agree entirely. It's sad when audio quality/volume is sacrificed for battery life specifications...

By the way, newest Sharp unit (DR7) has reduced output, 8mW/32ohms instead of Sharp's standard 10mW/32ohms.

Wait and see what in print, that the outputs have dropped? It is in print. Go look at the specs of the new models.

Although I generally support sony products (I have a vaio laptop, clie palm pilot, 3 sony md's, a sony receiver, sony portable cd player, etc), they do seem to be going down the tubes. It appears that they have recently started trying to have better specs for their products without quality and consistancy (i.e. netmd is NOT the drag-and-drop style recording it was originally advertised to be; output power has been traded for big battery life; and so on.) Poop on that man.

Only the MT170/180/190/200 were 10mW@32 ohms. All other Sharps were 10mW@16 ohms or 5mW@32 ohms - effectively the same.

Sonys are usually 5mW@16 ohms (2.5mW@32 ohms). Check what the impedence rating is on those new Sonys. I think the E909 was 3mW@32 ohms.

Panasonic: 3.5mW@22 ohms, or 3mW@32 ohms.

Aiwa: 8mW@16 ohms, 3.8mW@32 ohms.

So don't just go on the mW alone. My RQ-NX60 tape player from Panasonic is "only" 3.5mW, but that's into 50 ohms. Blasts almost any MD out there.

Apologies, people. The MS701/702 does have 10mW per channel into 32 ohms. However, the 721 and 722 have 10mW into 16 ohms (according to it's manual). And, surprisingly, so does the MT15.

Please excuse me. I forgot about the 701. It's like saying most Sonys are 5mW into 16 ohms, and getting upset that the E909 is the only one with 3mW into 32 ohms...

Please, enlighten me as to the "many other" recorders from Sharp who's HP out is 10mW at 32 ohms. The only other is the best sounding recorder of all time (bar the DR7, haven't heard that one) the MT831.

I guess 10mW at 32 isn't so standard?

Apologies, people. The MS701/702 does have 10mW per channel into 32 ohms. However, the 721 and 722 have 10mW into 16 ohms (according to it's manual). And, surprisingly, so does the MT15.

you're right about MT-15 but MT16/MT20 have 10mW/32 ohms.

Some of the SR series also have 10mW/32 ohms.

and, by the way, some MZ-E909s have 5mW/16ohms
