MD for jogging

I have a Sharp 877. You can NOT jog with it - of course it has a buffer, but if you plan on running for more than 40 seconds, it's going to make its way through it.

I've actually been really dissappointed in that. It doesn't take all that much motion for the 877 to be unable to read. Say I put it in my jacket pocket - it swings back and forth too much when I walk, and works its way through the buffer. Jogging is of course out of the question.

Do people with the Sony 505s or 707s have the same problem?

I have been running with my Sharp 821 for nearly four years and it has skipped maybe a handful of times. The error message was something like "Cannot Read". But once a year isn't bad really. My old JVC was a different matter entirely - couldn't even walk or cycle with it.

If u do alot of running (like I do) chances are u will have a stable running gait, i.e your arms won't be flailing about, and u won't be bouncing too high with every step, so this will lessen the likelihood of skipping. Or maybe I've been lucky with my Sharp.

I'm sure the newer units with their fancy LP2 (I'm jealous) 80 second "G Shock" or whatever it's called will be even better for it.

Now if only they'd make an N10 that was safe from sweat,rain and the occasional bump...

Has anybody tried jogging with the MD in a case that has a handstrap?  Would that work better than having it in a pocket?

Yeah that works better, but it's too much of a pain to bother with, in my opinion.

I have a sony mzn-505 which I have had a coupla weeks now. I cycle to and from work about 1.5miles everyday. The unit is loose in a pocket swings quite freely but I haven't had a skip yet. Apparently G-shock is more advanced than a 40 second buffer, but it works well.

Jogging in General:

Why I jog with the my MZ-R909 in the pocket of my vest, it skips or stops a lot. When I hold it in my hand, it almost never skips. I think the movement of your arm act as a buffer insulating it from the impact as your body bumps up and down. I just bought an armband-style MD holder, but right now theres too much stuff on my arm when I jog, for me to be able to wear it correctly. I'm waiting for summer (ie when I'm not jogging with 3 layers of clothes!) to try it out.

On "G-protection" vs other anti-skip:

I've used a Japanese version MZ-R900, which no "g-protection". I also have used an MZ-R909. I usde both while jogging. The 900 never skipped - even not once - and thats WITHOUT g-protection. The 909 does skip, if I don't hold it in my hand while running. So I'm wondering myself if this g-protection thing really means anything at all. BTW the 909 nevers skips if I'm just walking aroun or on the bust/train whatever, so its not faulty - its more of reflection on the g-protection technology.

On the 40-Second Buffer:

I think the kep with jogging is to let the buffer fill up first ie play it for the 40 secs FIRST, and then begin runnning. That way it has a full 40 secs headstart to correctly read whatever its going to play for you. That has worked well for me.

Someone above mentioned that they got an armband carrier/holder or something, for his/her MD. Where can you find these? Just as importantly, where can you find ones that don't look gay (silly)??

Don't any popular models (if any at all) come with custom-fit hooks or cases or something where you can hook it to your gym shorts or to your arm? Why not? That seems so important!!! Agggh.....!!! :evil: :x

Hi from my experience, when jogging your MD has to be held tight. I tried to run with my MZ-E900 in my pocket and it would skip every 50s. Same thing with a belt clip, I guess it was too lousy. Then I tried to put it in the back pocket of my trousers and it didn't skip because the pocket is smaller and the MD is held tight.

So that's what you should be looking for when running, I guess those armband are good because they are not lousy.
