I did the hack, I have firmware vers 1.40 works great!! Thanks to all.

On another note:

I gather by reading the posts on this group that MD's seem to have low volume output, compared to lets say portable CD players. I was wondering, since we are capable of hacking into these units via the service mode would it not make sense that maby the wounderful people over at Sony limited the output levels on these lovely units {via the eprom} so as to not damage our hearing. Would anyone know if there is a way to boost the output levels via the service mode. I have my suspicions that this may indeed be the case.

It's limited via resistor You may give it a try if you have soldering experience 8)
