I've had my MZ-R91 for a few years now. It was fine until one day after I recorded it showed up a disc error. Now I cannot record. I asked other people with MD's to format my discs and some could be formatted and the some could not. I cannot record anymore and it pisses me off because I spent quite a bit on it and it's not working. Would anyone have any suggestions or can provide assistance to me? Thanks for the help guys, you all take care~

What's the exact error code displayed?

Disc Err if I try to play a disc and if I try to record it like records it but then it shows the Disc Err msg after I'm done....

I have the exact same problem with an MZ-R90. This is a COMMON problem on portable Sony MD recorders.

Read this thread for further information which is based on investigations I carried out when trying to solve the problem on my unit. Unfortunately, short of trying to run a head cleaning kit over it, there is not much more you can do yourself without having a professional repairer look at it.

Mine is still stuffed, though I haven't tried running a head cleaner over it yet (mainly because I am not confident it will fix the problem), so I've purchased a cheap second hand recorder (NOT Sony!!!) and use that to record now and the MZ-R90 purely for playback.

Interestingly enough, I have no problems in using the MZ-R90 for track editing and titling, just recording. i.e discs remain playable after disc editing and titling on the MZ-R90.

Good Luck.

PS: If you do happen to find any additional information on top of what I have already provided, please let us know by following up in this thread.

This is indeed a common problem. My MZ-R91 is pretty much rooted and doesn't do much except playback and only when you hold it in certain positions e.g. face down (don't even try to record). Like your problem, sometimes it doesn't read the disc and I get a DISC ERR msg even though the disc is perfectly fine.

I don't think there is much you can do except bring it in for repair (expensive) or buying a new recording machine (can be expensive depending on your budget).

Recently got a N10 and that pretty much serves as my recording machine and the R91 I use for playback.

i remember reading on the Repair Q&A board of MiniDiscussion - i think it was in an interview with the guy who answers the questions (i think his name is David) that it is better to get a stand alone deck to record minidiscs and a player for portable listening. the record head on a portable recorder is delicate and can easily get damaged just from general wear and tear.
