Recording Live Shows with a Sony MZ-N707, Help

Hello Everyone.

I am new to this board and live recording.

My Setup:

RODE NT4 Stero XY condenser mic ( Phantom Powered ) --> Sony-MZ-N707. I montor this through AKG K240 headphones. I also have an adequate home studio.

My Problem: Distortion. Too much level coming into my MD. I can lower the recording volume manually and it seems to record quieter but the distortion is still there. Is there an Attenuation setting or a Hi Lo recording setting I am not making? Am I overdriving the input pf the MZ-N707?

What if I did this :

Rode Nt 4 ---> 2 Channel Pre Amp --> MZ-N707?

Would that give me the ability to lower the signal and remove this distortion? Has anyone had experience n taping really loud rock shows in packed clubs?

Ps: This Rode NT 4 rocks. I tried about 5 other mics before buying this one. For under a grand you can't really find much better, yet wink.gif

The recording I made last week was quite good , at times the bands volume would swell though and it clips.

Thanks for the advice.

I'll figure it out on my own.

There's just too many topics for this board. Look at all the posts, 1 reply 2 replies. Thats a sign of a poorly designed board. Until they trim the fat you may see my posts regurgitated until I start finding poepl e who know what they are talkijng about and not just reciting the weboard rules of conduct to be nothing more than a pain in the ass.

You have Non MD recording, Live Recording , and Tech Troubleshooting which all have articles about recording under different topics. Weak.

Hey Jed. Try the search button. It works quite well. Great for newbies who don't know how to use the forums. Also, double posts do not get faster response. Just ties up bandwidth.

As for your problem, try a battery box or preamp. I use cheap mics with great response. Built from scratch, not purchased.

Yep, I got a laugh out of it myself. Didn't think you were being cocky. I guess you could call what I did a boomerang post. Try to give someone a slap and I give myself one with my own hand. Hee Hee.

I have been on many different type of forums and I don't usually make that mistake.

As they say, oh well, S**t happens.

Inbetween all the BS I can tell you that you are all wrong, somewhat.

Phantom power adds a + 48V charge to the INPUT level of the dual condensers, NOT the OUTPUT.

You cannot plug a phantom powered mic ( at least the 4 I own ) into the 707's line in and expect to get a level. Anyone that has recorded more than the sound of thier own farts knows that. I toggle between the two IN's and I cannot get a level with Line In.

This is how you do it :

(XY Condenser MIC)---YSplitter to dual XLR====[PRE AMP]===--------[line in on 707]

* watch the levels.

Thanks for the comedy.

I wont need the search feature. laugh.gif
