Hi there,

I have an N707, bought expressly for the purpose of recording my music students, putting them on PC recording software (I bought SoundForge for this), and over time making portfolios of their progress. I have done a ton of research and browsing over this and other sites regarding this question, and I realize the issue has been addressed many times. However, I still can't get it to work. I think I need very detailed descriptions

What I've tried so far:

The N707 has no line-out, so I have been plugging a male-to-male 1/8 jack from my headphone jack (with the volume turned all the way up) into the line-in of my computer (a Gateway 700x--almost brand spankin' new--with a Soundblaster Audigy Audio card). Just to be on the safe side the Windows Volume Control (Mixer) is set to Record and the Line-In is selected. I have also tried it with Microphone selected. So far, using Soundforge I'm getting nothing--no sound at all during recording. I have also tried using MusicMatch and it hasn't worked (and I bought the upgraded MusicMatch).

Any ideas? I'm getting frustrated. I've spent two years looking at equipment and the N707 seemed the best bet--everyone on this forum says that the real time analog transfer is possible, and I can't get it to work! I'd like to think I didn't spend 420.00 for almost nothing (420.00 for the combo of N707/Soundforge/microphone).

I do the same thing and no problems, so I don't think that's it got to do with your MD or PC. When you plug MD to line in on PC you should hear the MD play (if you press play on it that is) on your PC speakers right away. Make sure that Line In is not muted in volume control and set the slider to 80% Here's what it looks on my PC:

I mute line in and mic when I don't use them to avoid noice.

I just bought a 707 too, and had similar problems, when I finally tried using a different cable (an old one I had lying around for years) than the one I had just bought from RadioShack. And it worked! So either RadioShack sold me a non-working cable, or they sold me the wrong cable... I'm not sure. But you might want to make sure it's not your cable that is having problems
