how might the MD detect track marks whilst recording

hello,

like many on this board I have recently began playing with my PCLink to digitally download files from my computer to my minidisc. As a DJ, I am keen on downloading my mixes, but thing I thought would be a simple benefit (in addition to the purer sound) was that I should be able to use my Real Player or Windows Media Player to play my mixes (already separated into tracks for CD-burning) track by track and have those track marks picked up by the MD in the recording process.

Now, this actually sort of works in Real or WMPlayer because the track to track handling is so poor that there is an audible discontinuity that the MD recognizes as a track change. The problem is that this is a mix and I'd like it to sound as smooth as when I play this as a CD in a normal CD player.

My next move was to try WinAMP. Props to the team at WinAMP for designing their player to smooth play from one track to the next (why was this so hard for Real and WMPlayer??) but I guess the WinAmp is too smooth because now no track marks are seen on the MD even though its changing tracks on the player.

SO MY QUESTION IS THIS: Can I insert either a bit of silence in the original recording or some special & inaudible signal to let the MD know there is a track mark needed? if I put just a space of silence in, how long does this have to be? (if I time it right between sounds, it can still be nearly inaudible). This wouldn't be that hard for me to do in Cool Edit when I'm tidying up my mixes anyway.

thanks,

Rob

There is a plug-in for Winamp 2.XX to put a length of silence of your choice between tracks.

It's called WinCue.

I don't know how many seconds any particular MD unit requires; sorry...
