dsteinwedel
Hey all, I'm looking for a portable MD Recorder for recording out and about (just about everywhere). Ideally I'll be going Mic-->Mic Pre-->MD. Also, I'd like to be able to adjust the record volume of the MD on the fly (which I've heard you can't do on Sony's?). When I went to the store today, customer service dude told me this wasn't possible with the models they carried (3 net MD versions). He said those have an input but it's only for digital transfers from CD/MP3. Other stuff you should know: Long battery life while recording is essential, as is at least 16/44.1 input (16/48 is preferable, i dunno if that's available), easy marking of new tracks is important as is durability. Preferably I'd like it to come in under $200. So anyways, what model would you reccomend and where can you go to buy these (I've had problems finding them in stores). Thanks, Dave
sudden
Ideal would be Sharp DR7 (called DR470 in Europe) but it's a bit over your butget. Second choise would be Sharp MT290 as it got mic in and on the fly adjust rec level (MT270 don't). Downside of MT290 is the size, quite bulky. Also look into second hand makret, you may get a nice MD for a good price. My second hand price rule is not to pay more that half price of current model at cheapest retail store. However, at the end of the day it comes down to supply and demand. Sharp MT99 and MT190 are two nice models that have the fetures you want. I got a MT99 and are very pleased with it. Take a look at this page to find out what model fits your purpose and purs: http://www.minidisc.org/equipment_browser.html What ever model you go for, do get a Sharp. Current Sony models are a sorry excuse for a mic recording unit. Also with a Sharp you don't realy need a mic pre amp. With a good mic it will sound great anyway. sudden
On the fly is that you can adjust rec level while recording, with Sony you have to pause then change level. Natuarly this will leav a gap in the recording. Idiotic if you ask me and totaly unnecessary as there can't be any pros to this system. On the other hand, Sony have other priorities than to make userfriendly products. Just like the stupid software with there NetMD's and one way transfer only. Not have optic out. Poor mic in. List can go on and on if I include other Sony stuff also.
