Guest Anonymous
My Sony MZ-N1 was stolen a few days ago and I am already missing it dreadfully  so am now looking for a replacement (damn all theives-may they grow boils on their faces and sores on their ar**s  ). I cant decide whether to stick with Sony (my MZ-N1 was the second that has been stolen off me and my second Sony MD) or try another manufacturer. Basically I want to be able to compress, have v. high quality playback, fast transfer rate, and long rechargeable battery life (everything really! ) The Sharp MD-DR470H looks good because of the 1-bit amp and headphone split polar thing, web says it records in LP4, but there's no mention of it having pc/usb connectivity or anything about transfer rates. Does the Sharp do this, or does it only record in real time? The Sony MZ-N10 has a faster transfer rate and familiar controls, but notes seem to suggest that the battery life on the MZ-N10 isnt as long as the N1 - is this correct? Will the N10 work with OpenMG, or only Sonic Stage? Does anyone have any alternate unit suggestions? any info/advise gratefully received.. . thanks
Guest Anonymous
All new Sonys have MDLP, but not all Sharps do (at Minidisco, only Sharp's 880S model records). Also, Sonys have better anti-skip protection, if you jog... Sony MD's don't sound quite as good, and for recording concerts, Sharp recorders are far, far superior. So it depends what you use the MD for - if you use it like an MP3 player, Sonys are probably better suited.
mAjEsTiC
well it really depends on what type of sound you like...different manufacturers have different "sound signatures"...sharp have the boomy bass sony has a more rounded sound imo (treble and bass are more or less balanced)... and yes the N10's battery doesn't last as long as the N1's...even though it's running off an internal Li-Ion battery it's only rated @ 340mAh (or was it 370mAh?? - not too sure of the value) as compared with the N1's 1400mAh (min.) NiMH gumstick...the N10 should work with OpenMG because both my units (N1 and N10) work with both programs...so don't worry there... the Sharp DR470 is not a NetMD unit so it records in real-time...i'm sure that sharp will release a new NetMD unit very soon based on the 1-bit amp technology so if you're not in a hurry then i would suggest you wait and see what they have to offer...otherwise as Guest said Sharp don't make many NetMD units...i think they only made one? but yes there are pro's and cons about different brands...it depends on your tastes as well...also as Guest said if you do a LOT of live recordings then get a Sharp...otherwise if you're happy with Sony then stick with it... Guest Anonymous
thanks guest & mAjEsTiC, need one quite quickly as I'm off on travels in a couple of weeks, so if there isnt gonna be a Sharp 1-bit NetMD released in that time I guess I'll probably stick with Sony. Saying that, it's now whether to get the N1 again or get the N10.. . apart from the faster transfer speed and more EQ control does the N10 have any other advantages over the N1, audible or control/layout? thanxs again peeps
mAjEsTiC
the N1 was a good unit IMO...even though it did have its flaws it remains loyal to me...the N10 as well is a good unit in its own right but i do have a few complaints to make about my unit...one is i feel that the sound output is somewhat thin and lacking (even with the EQ controls tweaked) as compared to my N1...as well the N10 maybe lighter and transfer faster but the cradle is very annoying since u can knock it off accidentally plus the battery life aint something you can brag about (its relatively good but i still prefer my N1's battery life) the control layout you need to somewhat get used to as well...the remote and the unit's control layout have been redesigned...not a problem but the annoyance of the jog dial being on the left hand side annoys me a bit coz it took a while to get used to since i'm right handed, also the contrast of the characters in the LCD isn't as readable as the N1's IMO (the N10's LCD display seems more light)...otherwise no complaints about either unit...it's your call which unit u want to get...they're both good units overall...
