Hi there,

I am in Australia and at this stage, a complete newbie to the whole MD-scene - I would like to ask you some questions and general advice if possible?

Apart from being able to listen to music on demand anytime on MD (which will be excellent), I would like to record live music from time to time. I intend to purchase some good stealth microphones to accompany the MD-Recorder, but I have no idea what to look for.

Once recorded, I would like to convert it to CD-R via my computer. Is there ANY way (I am open to suggestion) to get a digital copy of the recording from the MD into the computer or onto CD-R? I know people say that analog sounds pretty close to the digital recording, but I would prefer digital.

Other than that, what else do I look out for? I have heard Sharp MD Recorders are far better for recording live, so that recording levels can be adjusted on the fly – I understand this concept fine. Is it true, or do Sony have better overall Recorders?

Anyhow, any advice provided to me will be most appreciated, complete with (if you are a frequent live recorder) stealth (headworn, eyeglass worn) microphone recommendations and also (don’t want much do I?) headphone (not earbud) suggestions.

My total budget is approximately $1000-1200 Australian = $700USD. Do you recommend a particular online store to purchase from?

Thanks so much for your time.

Kind regards,

Adam

Honestly Adam,

Your best bet would be to get a Sharp DR-7 [which i recommend for recording], a Sony deck with optical out and a sound card with optical in.

The Sharp DR-7 is around $240, the Sony deck would be around $175-200, a pair of eggo's perhaps [i'm thinking MDR-D66's] = $80-100, and the sound card with optical in could be anywhere from $50-100 [unless you already have one].

If that setup sounds right for you I can help you find the relevant links for you to purchase this equipment.

I'm not too knowledgeable about microphones, but if you buy everything that I've mentioned you'd still have a bit for one.

Hope this could help.

As kurisu has said above your best bet for a digital copy of your recorded files is through and MD Deck...get one with an optic out...i think here in aus that would be the MDSJE780 (RRP A$999)...and i also agree with kurisu about getting the Sharp DR7 recorder since they're live recording far surpases that of sony units...u can probably pick one up from Minidisc Australia...they import from Singapore/Japan i think and their prices are relatively good...soo check that out since it is a very good site for getting parts not available in aus yet...=) in terms of mics i'm not too sure where to get the "stealth" ones but the smallest i've seen is something that you can clip on to your shirt...sorry if i've repeated wot kurisu said...
