On some of my MD's when I play them back, they stop for split seconds and comntinue as if they are getting stuck. I guess it could be dirt in the disk somehow. It happens on both my portable sony and the sony recorder I have at home. It is worse on the portable one. If it is down to dirty disks (it only happens on the odd song) is there some way to clean them? I know you can get gear for CD's but never seen anything for MD. mAjEsTiC Posted August 25, 2003 Report Share Posted August 25, 2003 there also could be something wrong with the anti-shock feature on that unit which causes the lens mechanism to keep mistracking...it was a general fault on many of the MZ-E500 players (i've experienced skipping/stuttering on this unit even when it was flat on a stable table...) so if it isn't dirty MD's that's causing it it could be something mechanical...i don't think there is an MD cleaning kit for the actual MD Disc since the materials that the MD is made out of is very different to that of a normal CD...try cleaning the lens with a lens cleaner or something and see if it work...if u'v tried this to no avail then this problem has gotten me stumped if it's nothing mechanical either... PJF220 Posted August 25, 2003 Report Share Posted August 25, 2003 I don't think it's the lens because it always stutters on the same tracks and at the same point in the tracks. This happens whether it is played on my portable unit (Sony MZ E300), the recorder (Sony MDS JE640) or even the car head unit (Pioneer). There are only three tracks on three MD's which are affected right now but they all used to play without fault and one in particular is not very old at all. I would be interested in getting a lens cleaner though as it can't be a bad idea to give them all a clean. Where would I look for one? I'm in the UK. mAjEsTiC Posted August 25, 2003 Report Share Posted August 25, 2003 oh rite then that's most probably the disc itself...i'v had a dud one made by sony and it's not a common thing for MD's 2 screw up like this but yeh it might be that it has a bad sector right there on the disc where it skips...not too sure how to fix this since there aren't any MD Disc cleaners around (well not that i've seen) and hmmm...since i don't live in the UK i hav noo idea where to track down a lens cleaner for u...sorry...mayb someone living in the UK like the user KJ_Palmer on this forum can help out... Maybe we're spoiled here somewhat in London, but you should find some by shopping around. Your recording unit might be mis-tracking causing bad sectors, so it might be worth getting a head cleaner as well. I think TDK do a combined head/lens cleaner. But also make sure your recording unit (JE640?) is on on stable, flat surface and doesn't get subjected to shocks as this could cause bad sectoring. I will find a head and lens cleaner and give that a go but it is odd that the songs that caue the trouble used to play fine and it just happened all of a sudden which would suggest they recorded fine and something happened at a later date. Doesn't sound like it is a common fault from what I have read so lets hope it doesnt spread to other disks/songs. One thing I must try is recording over the infected song and see if it still happens. Guest Anonymous Posted September 15, 2003 Report Share Posted September 15, 2003 You didn't mention whether the disks you are having troubles with previously worked, but if the disks you are having problems with have been recently recorded on a portable recorder, then the problem may be with the portable recorder having a misaligned laser.
