Guest Anonymous Posted August 29, 2003 Report Share Posted August 29, 2003 im really considering buying a new md off amazon, and i have a few questions about the sony mzn510 1) does it have a mic in(? if not what is a similar model w/ one 2) does it use standard usb cables? (has anyone actually ordered this off amazon? it doesnt say which cables it comes with!) 3) pls. explain the disadvantages of openGM or the data lockup thing that net MDs have.. from what i understand i cant transfer data from the recorder to the pc using data cables. 4) does it record in mp3 from an external source? if not what format modes does it record on i can only afford an md in the $150 price range overall is this a goodbuy? i have a sharp md-mt821 but i want to upgrade to an mp3 capable md recorder now or suggest an md model that i should buy.. thanks a lot! (has anyone actually ordered this off amazon? it doesnt say which cables it comes with!) yes this unit should come with a USB cable inside the box already...it comes as standard (unless amazon actually open the box up, take out the USB cable and then ship it off to you which is highly unlikely) 3) pls. explain the disadvantages of openGM or the data lockup thing that net MDs have.. from what i understand i cant transfer data from the recorder to the pc using data cables.well the disadvantages of OpenMG/SonicStage is the limitation of how many songs that you can transfer over to the MD (i.e. it has a limit of 3 transfers per song) but this can usually be overcome with either the backup utility or deleting the optimised files from the folder...and once they are transfered over to the MD u can't do much with the songs on the MD except for the basic title & move ...u can't delete the song through the MD unit, if you do want to delete a song you can only do it from OpenMG/SonicStage software...and yes you cannot upload music that you've recorded on the MD unit to the PC via the USB cable, u can only do it through real-time via analogue 3.5mm Stereo cable... 4) does it record in mp3 from an external source? if not what format modes does it record on MD's record in ATRAC/ATRAC3 format (ATRAC is used for SP recordings and ATRAC3 is used for LP2/LP4 recording) when recording from any source whether from PC or externally...it is different to mp3 but uses the similar concept of compression of files (albeit they compress in different ways)... can only afford an md in the $150 price range overall is this a goodbuy? i have a sharp md-mt821 but i want to upgrade to an mp3 capable md recorder nowthis is fair enough but the budget seems a little tight if you want to get the N710 with mic input...you could just buy this unit (N510) and get a powered mic instead that will still work but then you would have to use the LINE IN jack to record from the Mic...i can't suggest you any other recorders since Sharp do not make that many NetMD models...(only one so far i think) so yeh if you are on a budget you could stick with the sony...it's an alright unit...oh and almost forgot the N710 uses both a gumstick NiMH (NH-10WM i think) battery pack along with an attachable AA pack...so you can use both to get longer battery life...hope this helps... clonmult Posted September 3, 2003 Report Share Posted September 3, 2003 Note that the Sony Minidisc players (or at least my 510) DO NOT use standard USB cables. Sony have messed about with the cable connections, effectively converting a standard spec item into a bespoke one, which is a pain in the back end - I've always got to keep 3 different USB cables with me now (standard USB, mini USB and the MD usb cable). mAjEsTiC Posted September 3, 2003 Report Share Posted September 3, 2003 not too sure wot u consider as a standard USB cable but if you own other sony peripherals such as digital still and digital video camera they use the same connectors as the USB cable on the N1/707/505 and i think the lower models of the new 2003 lineup such as the N710 (so they can be used with the unit)...the N10 however uses a completely different USB cable...very thin and flat but this doesn't concern your model so you don't need to worry...but yes if you don't own sony peripherals it's a pain to carry around heaps of USB cables as clonmult said above... But try using the Sony Net MD cable with a digital camera - it won't work. Try it the other way round, a standard USB cable with a Net MD player, that won't work either. At least, it doesn't work with my Net MD and digital cameras. Which is probably why Sony say that Net MD may not work with USB hubs. Sony have frigged around with the pinouts on USB. mAjEsTiC Posted September 4, 2003 Report Share Posted September 4, 2003 well i've tried this and it works...the cable on my sony digital still camera (DSC-P5), digital video camera (DCRPC101) and on that came with my unit (N1) work perfectly whether it uses either one on eht cradle or on the digital camera...so if you bought anything else from sony and it comes with USB cable (provided they got the same plug) then it should work no prob... Wierd - my Samsung digital camera appears on the PC (which implies that something is working) with the Sony cable, but it won't transfer. Just tried it with my cheapy webcam, with the Sony cable. Its okay. Darned strange. Ignore my previous comments then. Maybe its something with the Samsung camera then? Do you only buy sony kit? I wish Sony would do a digital camera with a MD drive in, instead of the stupid Mavica-CD unit (too bulky, and 3" CD-Rs are too expensive). I wish Sony would do a digital camera with a MD drive in, instead of the stupid Mavica-CD unit (too bulky, and 3" CD-Rs are too expensive).well i don't only just buy the sony kit usually i buy basically anything that is good at the time...but for digital i bought sony because there wasn't any other good competing models when i bought them..well they did make a digital video camera using MD i think a while back? not too sure but i think i've seen it somewhere...but Sony cabling works on Sony cameras since they all have the same output on the unit...other camera brands use different plugs than sony so they don't fit...but otherwise all of the cabling from sony basically work with any other sony product from my experience...
