Guest Anonymous
Hi, I hope someone here knows whats wrong with my r900. When I'm playing an MD, the unit will play fine for exactly 16 seconds at which point it makes strange noises and then continues to play fine. The noises (beeps/blips) occur again at 19 seconds of playing and then other regular times. It doesn't matter which track I begin from or what MD I play, the noises occur at the EXACT same time after play begins (16sec, 19sec...25sec). Therefore I don't think it is a mechanical problem. I suspect there might be a problem with the decoding.. maybe a software problem? Has anyone else had a problem like this? Does anyone know if this is repairable? Is the software replaceable on MD Players?

Is the software replaceable on MD Players? This noise, if very low, is being emitted by the mechanism and is perfectly normal. The data (recording) on the disc is read occassionally and is stored in a "memory buffer" chip that enables the skip-free feature that MD is noted for (and it works very well). The disc spins at regular intervals and is read and stored in the buffer. The actual data (music) is read from the buffer. Think of it as a water tank holding it's contents and then every so often releasing a gallon of water every (example) ten seconds. If the noise is really loud, try placing the unit in a different position. The noise will probably change, but it will still be there. Some discs might make more noise than others. I have had problems with the Memerox clear discs, but not the color ones. The clear discs do not work on 4 out of my five units, but the color ones work every time. Go figure. There is no software updates that I am aware of, nor do I think you could replace it, it is stored in the main microprocessor chip. -Mike
Guest Anonymous
thanks for your reply, but it isn't mechanical noise, like motor whirring or anything, from the actual unit. It's noise coming through the line/headphones, like weird R2-D2-like bleeps. The actual mechanism of the unit seems fine. it records and plays... it just seems to be garbling the encoding and decoding or something... that's why I thought it might be the ATRAC encoding software that's messed. It doesn't seem to be actually damaging the MD's because they work fine on other units. Does anyone know how much it is just to take it to a Sony repair center and have it looked at? Guest Anonymous
...oh and I know its not a normal noise (besides the fact that playback is interrupted at exact periods with a second of digital staticy noise) because I've had the unit for two years and then one day this weirdness started. I got a MZN510 so I can actually listen to my MD's but I would like to save the 900 for live recording.(Can't afford any new unit with mic inputs )
BerkY
Well if the discs play properly on other units then it has to be a reading problem. Maybe something wrong with the ATRAC chip. The decoding part is where the problem looks like. It must be encoded properly since it plays fine on other units as you say. You should get it checked out.
