Guest Anonymous
Does anyone know of a website, place, or just have a suggestion about most, all, or even one of the current portable minidisc recorders and its amplifier's output levels? I'm looking to buy an MD (damn, the more I read the more excited I get) but I don't want to order a lovely unit only to find out I can't listen to it very loudly. I'd prefer a NetMD player , but I have no brand loyalty - I just want the best unit. Any technical output description would be hella-appreciated. I'm a novice. 8
I highly recommend skipping on the amp. Although the outputs of MD portables aren't as strong as the iPod, they are definitely loud enough. You really should get used to listening w/ headphones at decent volumes, or your hearing will deteriorate. My Sharp DR7 gets listened to around 18/30, and sometimes up to 23/30 when there's noise around or I want to crank it. At first, it seemed a LITTLE to weak, but I got used to it, and now it sounds very loud----as it should, or you're going to have problems in the future... HAVING SAID THAT...there ARE plenty of MD enthusiasts who want to crank their units louder and happen to love amps, so I hope that one of them will step forward and recommend some for you (even though I'm against them)... Guest Anonymous
Thanks for the reply...you're probably right - I should get used to listening to headphones at a decent volume, b/c hearing is fragile and is tough to get back once lost (what isn't?). The only thing that concerns me, though, is that I've been downloading Sony manuals and finding out that the same weak output levels that caused me to ditch my portable CD player are the same output levels that their MDs come with. I don't want to spend $250 or above on distorted garbage. I should say that I'm looking for a strong amp b/c strong amps at low sounds sound less distorted that weaker amps at low sounds, but that's crap. I sort of want it loud. Guest Anonymous
I'm sorry, that last joke got lost in my muddled communication. It's true that better amps sound better than lesser amps at similar volumes - I meant to poke fun at myself by taking the high road about volume and distortion, when I really just want a loud unit. LOUD!
