  • 3 weeks later...

Yup, my MD after 18 months has finally stopped recording.

Playback only now is possible.

I think what I will do this time because I am annoyed, is buy home recording deck or the N10 and use that in the home.

I will have to buy a player and let that get some harsh use.

Recording and playing back extensively I think has exhausted the laser and the magnetic read/write head.

Lost my faith in Sony now. Old MD (R35) lasted 4 years before I bothered to replace it with N1.

yeh i agree...the older units hardly ever failed this soon...oh well...i think it could be either that the recording head is completely dead or that it somehow has become misalligned...either way this problem wasn't as frequently encountered with the older units...

Just *ensure* that you do not drop it and it should be fine.

There is a big disadvantage to these new micro-optical pickups and heads. If its dropped once, fairly small drop even, it can knock the head out of position. Because MD is on such a small scale, a small amount could make the difference whether the recorder saves data accurately or not.

I think they should use better materials, I would rather pay more and get a machine that will last 3-5 years than have a smaller, lighter product that lasts just 18 months.

I'll have to buy the N10 for now cause I don't like the look of the N910 and don't know when the replacing models are coming out. Sony seem to be slow this year in announcing their replacement models.

I really did like the look of the N1 I have to say. I will just have to use it as my MD player and have the N10 for home recording only.

N10 users, if you could post your experiences with the N10 plz smile.gif, as I have not seen many reviews on this product.

Well the N10 arrived today.

I examined it closely and can see that the magnetic head on this looks more solid than the old one. As well as that it looks like it was manufactured differently. I guess Sony may have learned of the issue with the N1 and modified the design.

It records quick, cause I'm used to 16X in LP2 but this one rips through the precess.

The only downfall is that its a 2mW amp, so although the sound quality was better than the N1, it seemed a little quieter at the same volume mark.

Overall its a good system 8) . I will use it solely for recording the house and use the N1 to play back.

I would use my E10 but I gave that to my sister smile.gif

ah i have the jap version of the N10 so the output aint capped...but it still sounds lighter than my N1 unit (<- this is under repairs atm due to a mechanical fault)...the E10 i'm not using coz i don't really wanna wreck it so i end up using my DS8 which is a kick ass player IMO... tongue.gif

Oh I see. In which case maybe in 3 years time when I can be bothered to replace my MD recorder, I may decide to import.

This first happen to me with the MZR90.

The 91 I bought was fine then I had the same issue with the R900.

Seems this volume capping thing had been in effect for some time.

I would prefer if they left the volume to the choice of the user. After all it's our ears that are being affected. smile.gif
