Sony MZ-B100 extinct?

Anyone else noticed that it can't be found online? I checked as recently as 10 days ago & it was available all over the Web. This week it's out of stock everywhere -- including Sony direct. Is it discontinued?

(After soliciting advice here & slowly settling on the MZ-B100, it looks like I screwed up waiting too long to buy my DH's Christmas present -- if anyone has other suggestions for a stubby-fingered, fairly klutzy, Luddite-type journalist who needs the best tool for recording-by-phone ability, I'd welcome them.)

thnx,

kren

This is the pathetic exchange I just had online with sonystyle:

Gilbert: Hi, my name is Gilbert. How may I help you?

Gilbert: Hello Karen.

You: Hi Gilbert -- I've been researching minidisc recorders for biz purposes and had settled on the MZ-B100, but in the past two days it has gone out of stock at almost every online outlet, including sony style. are you guys discontinuing it? is there another option?

Gilbert: The MZB100 is currently out of stock and is not available online...

You: Uh, duh, but that's what I just told you. I'm asking you if it's being discontinued. I'm asking you if a replacement is coming.

Gilbert: I do not have information as to when it might be back in stock for sale online..

Gilbert: Currently there is not business recorder as such..

You: I see. Thanks

I haven't checked ebay, because I really don't want to invest this much money in a unit that's being discontinued before it even gets to our dootstep. Call me a belt-and-suspenders type, but it's a lot of $$ to spend on something that I'd be worried about being supported by the manufacturer. I'd feel better if Sony was just caught unawares by the demand for the unit, and was planning to manufacture more, but I can't get a straight answer from them on what's up.

This is the embarrassing part -- if you scroll down a page or two in this very forum, you'll find that the MZ-B100 was recommended to me several weeks ago. I was waiting and waiting for the price to come down -- I figured there might be a Christmas sale -- and voila! -- it goes off the market.

Again, it's not for music recording, but for voice (mostly phone) interviews for my writer-husband, who needs usable, well-marked, sturdy and solidly-sized controls, variable pitch control, and cares not a whit about sound quality.

There's not much else out there...

I guess you are going to have to look for a new model... anyway doesnt matter if the product is going off the market. As long as you have a guarantee and a receipt then you will be supported by ONE whole year... And after that no matter if the product is just brand new or old you will have to pay to get it serviced... Dont know why you waited that long. I never believe in sales. Most of the time the top of the range stuff dont even get price reeduction anyway. Even if it does it is somewhere aroudn the 10-15% range and that already pays off for the weeks of usage that i get compared to waiting weeks before getting the product... See where I am getting at? smile.gif It is called maximising utility as we economists call it... laugh.gif When I want something bad I go out and buy it.

Have you looked at the Sony MZ-B10 (http://www.minidisc.org/part_Sony_MZ-B10.html)? This is the newer "business" model (and much cheaper than the B100) and should include all the features your husband wants. I still see plenty of B10's and B100's in the shops in the shops in London, and you can order both models from MyMinidisc (http://www.my-minidisc.de/index.php?langua...disc.de/nav.php) if you're in Europe (they may ship elsewhere).

BerkY -- point taken on my foot-dragging. I am suitably chastened.

Kevin -- From a review somewhere, I got the idea that the B100 was the later model, not the B10. Doh! I'll re-research everything. THANK YOU!!

Hi kren, the B10 was released in Feb 2003, the B100 in Oct 2001.

See here: B10 and here: B100. (I've got both units by the way tongue.gif).

The B10 is actually a bit lower spec than the B100 (hence the price) but has more modern features: ATRAC Type S and digital pitch control. The B100 has the older fashioned speed control (ie. pitch rises/lowers with speed). Both are excellent units though.
