Guest Anonymous
i was wondering if these speakers http://www.netelectrics.biz/details.asp?pr...dID=522&DepID=6 would work if i used my optical cable from my sony mz-n1 minidisc player directly to these speakers. It says in the specs that it allows coaxial, optical and stereo input but was unsure if this means the speakers would work through my minidisc player. Many thanks for your time
BerkY
To be able to answer your question we have to decern what OPTICAL IN and OPTICAL OUT mean... OPTICAL IN basically means there is a 'digital in' into your minidisc. Thus, you can record music to your minidisc digitally. However it gets converted to analog before being recorded to the minidisc. Thats just the way it works. Its just digital when leaving the OPTICAL OUT. OPTICAL OUT means 'digital out'... It is an output jack that can digitally transfer music to any device connected to it via an optical cable. The jack you have on your minidisc is an OPT IN. Hence, it allows for music to be recorded to your minidisc. The jack at the back of the speaker system you have linked also has an OPT IN. So both have OPT IN... You cannot connect them digitally. You need a DIGITAL OUT/OPTICAL OUT to connect it to the OPTICAl IN/DIGITAL IN of the speaker system. However, you can do it via analog. Just plug the speaker cable to the MDs LINE OUT. Simple as that... However it will just be a waste of money... Why buy such a costy speaker system for a minidisc?!?!? Maybe for your soundcard (and it would only be worth it if it supports Dolby Digital 5.1)... Hope this has answered your question... Cheers BerkY
PaulBennett
This is partially a reply to Berky: Berky wrote: you can record music to your minidisc digitally. However it gets converted to analog before being recorded to the minidisc. Don't know where you got that silliness. The minidisk magnetic track is recorded with saturated magnetic digital, not magnetic analog information. And when using LP1 mode, the magnetic track of the minidisk holds virtually the same 0's and 1's as the non-compressed digital information on a CD. And even when using a reduced quality compressed digital source such as MP3, the minidisk doesn't suffer the analog noise problems associated with all analog recordings. However, you can do it via analog. Just plug the speaker cable to the MDs LINE OUT. Simple as that... However it will just be a waste of money... Why buy such a costy speaker system for a minidisc? If that speaker system has optical digital input and your MD has optical digital output, you would have a very nice bookshelf music system. The advantage of optical digital coupling vs wired digitial are dubious but relate to power supply isolation and switching weaknesses. (clicks, contact problems and cost)
KJ_Palmer
Well, the MZ-N1 doesn't have an optical output, which is (I'm sure) what Berky was getting at. But it does have a stereo line output which could be used with the Acoustic Solutions system, just like most bookshelf or hi-fi systems.
