Which MD should I use for recording?

Hi. This is probably a noob question, but I did not find a good answer with a forum search.

I while ago I bought my first MD, a Sony MZ-N910 portable. Recently I bought another one, a used Sony MDS-JE510 deck.

I'm wondering, which unit should I use for recording? It's mainly CD's via the optical in, perhaps later also some music or TV-shows from my digital DVB-T TV receiver (also with optical in). I realise that the portable can record and play also the MDLP2 and MDLP4 but the deck does neither record or play those formats. However, it's SP that I'll be using so it really doesn't make a difference.

I believe the portable has a newer ATRAC version while the deck might be a little sturdier.

So, which would give better audio quality? I know I could do some tests but don't have the time and with my current speakers or earphones would not necessary notice the difference. But before recording possibly tens of MD's, it'd would be nice to know the better way..

Thanks in advance.

Your N910 certainly has better potential recording abilities than your JE510, but would be slightly more susceptible to vibration than the deck, which, as you rightly say would be somewhat "sturdier". I'd say stick with recording digitally with your N910 but keep it nice and stable. Your deck will actually play back the N910's recordings better than it's own, though there won't be a huge difference either way.

How is that so? Can you explain how the portable will make better recordings than the deck?

Now tell me which is best in my case and why please.

I have a Sony JE520 deck and a Sharp MD-MS200H Portable that I mostly use through an amp in my car. Until now I'm doing all recordings on the deck.

Thanks.

i think it's because the N910 is more advanced than that of your JE510 deck as the JE510 deck was released about 98 i think and the N910 has just been released recently...the N910 sports features that your deck doesn't have and in that time span of about 4-5 years there has been a lot of technological changes put into recorders that make their recording quality as good as decks...the Type S ATRAC DSP would help considerably to outperform that of your deck i would imagine...
