crombie
I connected my Md recorder to my JVC (XV-S402) with an optical line to record some music, but the Md won't record. Can this be fixed?
highlandsun
Maybe. It's possible that the source disc is copy-protected. You'll need an SCMS copy-bit killer to fix that. Or a PC with a soundcard that has optical I/O, generally sound cards ignore the SCMS bits. If the source disc is a DVD, you have to make sure the DVD player's optical output is set for a stereo PCM stream. Normally it defaults to Dolby AC3, which won't make much sense to an MD recorder. Tjerk
Even my sony new dvd layer doesn't have a SCMS bit. So i don't think any other brand will have a SCMS bit installer in there dvd-players. Probably you have to put the digital output stream to PCM instead of DolbyDigital/DTS. Mystyler
I know here in Australia, if your MD will not record from DVD it is due to SCMS. Many other parts of the world have this too, but the Netherlands seem exempt...?! You can still make an excellent copy using the analouge outs from your DVD player. sharkymark
but the Netherlands seem exempt...?! That's not true. I have a Sony DVD player connected optically to my Sony MD deck and I also get the "cannot copy" message when trying to copy something from a DVD digitally (mine has been set to PCM instead of DD). i don't think any other brand will have a SCMS bit installer in there dvd-playersEvery DVD player from the bigger brands (Sony, Pioneer, Panasonic etc.) has SMCS installed. Mystyler
I didn't think it was true!! I do know of dodgy Chinese brand DVD units that ignore SCMS, but as you say sharkymark, with all the big brands I've never been able to copy digitally from a DVD. highlandsun
Seems like a lot of bother. Load the DVD into your PC, run smartripper and pull the audio tracks directly...
