That might be a mono mic with a stereo plug (so one signal goes into both channels), which is fine for voice/interviews/etc. For music, you'll get fuller sound with a stereo mic, even if it's a one-point stereo mic, and if you can separate a pair of mics even a few inches it will make music sound much more three-dimensional.

The other thing I'd question with this mic is that it plugs directly into the mic jack, which means that unless the housing is really good it will pick up vibrations and noise from the MD player (especially whir of MZ-R900 or MZ-N1). Even though it looks cute to plug directly into the MD, you're better off with a mic on a cord to get away from machine vibration.

This guy makes a variety of mics that he sells on Ebay, and if they live up to his specs they're probably pretty good. If you try one, report back to the board!

Hi, thanks for replying.

after buying it the seller told me i needed a preamp which he is selling. Go to the link and check his other items. It looks quite small.

Do I really need a preamp for my n510? I want it for voice recording, so the mic will be right up by my mouth.

Thanks

There have been some complaints (search these forums) about the N710 having a weak headphone output.

You might be better off, and save some $$$, if you look around Ebay for a MZ-N707 or, if you don't care about downloading MP3s from your computer to MDs, for the MZ-R700 or MZ-R900. Sharps with mic-ins are also a good alternative for live recording.

Whoever sold you the N510 should have told you it didn't have a mic input. None of the MZ-N5xx have mic input.

I'm at the critical stage where I'm just about to buy the n710. I sold the n510 a fraction of the price being only one day old sad.gif

So does the input mic work well or not? I want it for voice recordigs and things like that

The N710's mic input would work fine for what you want it for. The problem that "Guest" mentioned is this unit's headphone output for playback is the lowest of any MD portable (if you buy it in Europe). Many users don't find this to be a problem though.

If you're looking for a louder unit in the budget range, I can recommend the Sharp MD-MT290.

Congrats! An excellent choice! The DR-420 is a very impressive unit for the price, and blows away any of the low-end Sony's into oblivion. Last weekend I actually tried one out in Richer Sounds and I couldn't believe how Sharp have managed to get the price down to compete with the entry-level units, it's remarkable value for money. I didn't get to listen to it, but if it's anything like my DS8 then it'll be worth every penny. It has very solid build quality, the buttons are very nice to touch and the unit is very small considering it's an entry-level unit. I think you will be very suprised as to how the unit looks in real life as opposed to the pic's released by Sharp - it is actually very nice in the flesh and the pic's don't do it justice at all.

Auvi 1-Bit Digital Amp, NetMD, solid construction, nice button layout and small design, all for £110, you can't go wrong!

My only very small gripe with it was that the next model down (The DR-410) actually looks nicer in real life than the DR-420 (chrome navigation buttons, slightly different volume buttons and design around the display) but that really is just a minor hitch and the DR-420 still looks very nice.

Be sure to let us know what you think of it when it arrives! biggrin.gif
