A440 Posted February 22, 2004 Report Share Posted February 22, 2004 Haven't tried one but looking at the specs it should be decent for interviews, though not for music--only goes down to 50hz, not the deepest bass. It might not be so good for ambient sounds because the S/N ratio is only 40db, while better microphone capsules go down to 58-62db. That suggests it might have some self-noise that you'd hear in recording quiet sounds. It doesn't say that it's a stereo mic, so it's probably mono--again, fine for interviews but a little two-dimensional if you're trying ambient sounds. Ebay's "Stereo Lapel Microphone for Minidisc" is cheaper, even shipped to England, and I've used it for interviews, though not ambient sound. It's got some hiss, though it's impossible to tell whether that's from the mp3 conversion or the mic itself. It's also a bit boomy. But the voice sounds good, so if you're doing interviews it should work. One thing about these mics that plug in directly--they'll get motor noise and vibration from the MD. I bought my mic from the US ebay which are 20-20000 whereas these uk mics tend to be 50-16000. It only takes about 7 days to ship from the US and they are cheaper than the UK mics. Check out the church audio mics. I have one of these. They are very good for their price. troyka Posted February 28, 2004 Author Report Share Posted February 28, 2004 thanks for that ouijaouija, i may get a stero one if i cant make one myself, but they look simple enough so i will have a try. i just need to find a maplin close enough.. i am in the UK yeah. and a happpy bunny today just found a local shop with disks 5 for five pounds with a plastic storeage box as well. memorex ones 74 min, they seem quite good. You can carry them around and record wherever you want without any hassle. If the source is too loud for the mic it may cause buzzing though. You could fix this with a battery module. If it is too quite you won't record much of anything at all. Generally a preamp may help. They do ship internationally. The Panasonic mic capsules used in most good starter mics are WM-60AT or WM-61 on this page. http://dkc3.digikey.com/pdf/T041/1053.pdf And they're less than $2 each, which makes you wonder how much the mic makers mark them up. The wm-60at is no longer made. I use much more expensive capsules on my more pricey mics and panasonic wm-61a on my cheaper mics under $30.00. There is a lot of labor that go's into making a mic. Some of the makers out there really know there stuff to name a few Visivox Technologies, Core Sound ect. all make good products you are paying for more then a bag of parts your paying for a good product carefull attention to detail and the know how to build something that will sound good. For its more expensive mics, Sound Professionals specifies that it uses Audio-Technica capsules. Just out of curiosity, what does Church Audio use? I've seen your products on Ebay and the prices are great. I'm particularly interested in your mics and in your preamps, which look like a real bargain. Are other preamps overpriced? Reactive Posted November 1, 2004 Report Share Posted November 1, 2004 I'll just add that the true cost of running a legitimate business is way more than the material cost of a few microphone elements. Taxes, wages, overhead ect all have to be built in to the cost of a microphone. Chris, I respect what your doing, (we started out on ebay back in 2001 with the pen microphone), however you'll find that your costs will sore as your business grows. It is a certainty. I enourage those of you that are handy with a soldering iron to make your own microhones. However, If you are looking for a particular design and some quality (ie something that does not look homemade) then look to the online retailers. A440 Posted November 3, 2004 Report Share Posted November 3, 2004 Seriously, I don't mean to underestimate the labor, expertise and--equally important--quality control involved in putting together a good mic, preamp, etc. Little things like the rubber shrink tubing (or whatever it's called), the clip mounting and the mic housing can make a lot of difference to the usuability and durability of the mic, and the matching of the pair of mic elements is important to getting a good recording.
