So, I've made the decision to buy my boy a personal minidisc player/recorder for his birthday (rather good of me to say that he both stole and subsequently broke mine!!). Being a girl who appreciates a bit of quality, I want to get the best. This is also necessary as my fella is a musician (drummer) and needs the unit for recording. Now I thought that this would be easy, but oh no, upon looking into it I have met a problem. A rather big problem in the fact that I do not have a clue what all of the jargon is going on about... And this is where you come in. it would be much appreciated if you could give me a breakdown of general jargon and and answer this question for me.

1] What are the best portable recorders on the market - they have to be compatable with a Sony ECM-MS907 mic.

Thank you all for your time and hopefully your replies...

P.S. I reside in the UK, so European models only...

Well, first off - welcome to the forums.

Anyway, are you aware of the upcoming Hi-MD format? It boasts features that are worlds beyond the current Minidisc format, and would give you greater functionality in the recording sense. The thing is though, it doesn't debut until April. Each Hi-MD disc can carry one gigabyte of data, and has a plethora of recording options available - ones espesically attractive to someone who is interested in recording.

Here's the FAQ about it: http://minidisc.org/hi-md_faq.html

Here's a listing of the units scheduled to sell in April: http://minidisc.org/himd_table.html

Of course, there are standard MD options that we can discuss as well, but I figured that you should catch up on this [if you haven't already] and then we can consider the other options.

Thanks!!

Er, to be honest, no I am not aware. The problem is though that the boy's B-day is right at the beginning of April, so there's not really much time for manoeuvre with regards to theHi-MD format. Could you tell me what the main differences are, and whether or not the difference in price will really be worth it...

Thanks for your reply, I feel as though I'm learning something already!!

hey there and welcome to our forums...

to answer your question the new Hi-MD format will be well worth the wait in my opinion...i myself as well as many fellow posters will undoubtly get one eventually...the difference between the existing format and the new Hi-MD format is that Hi-MD's have a bigger capacity it holds up to 1GB of data or around 8 hours of music in SP (Standard Play) recording mode called SP (or for Hi-MD's they call this Hi-SP)...there are also LP (Long Play) recording modes that come in two flavours or so to speak; LP2 (Long Play x 2) and LP4 (Long Play x 4) so on a Hi-MD you will be able to have up to 16 hrs of music stored in LP2 mode and 32 hrs of music in LP4 mode...but other than the difference in how much music can fit on the disc and having the ability to upload music from MD -> PC there isn't much else that the Hi-MD has over the current models...Hi-MD's are bridging the gap between MD and mp3 players because it is a high capacity media that doesn't cost an arm and a leg to buy bigger storage cards for the unit...also the price of the new units will be similar to that of what you see now with the current units...also the discs themselves will be similarly priced to that of the current MD blanks on the market....

hope this helps...

So, from what I can gather, the new Hi-MD stores more data. Yes?!

OK. So will the recording quality be any better? Also if we ignore this option, what would be the other recommended units on the market?

Thanks guys, it's good to get quality advice from people who aren't trying to sell me something!

Remember European models only!!

hi md will be capable of holding a ton more data than regular md (to get exact values check the minidisc.org homepage). plus the uploadability will let you take the recording that you made, and transfer it to your computer. this is something that many musicians, like me, are grateful for. so i would recommend hi md. if you want a regular md, i am only familiar with sony units, therefore i would recommend (if you can find it) a sony r55. it is great for recording and i use it often. only downside is its not netmd therefore you wont be able to get music on it from your computer, hassle-free. if you have the funds, the mz-n1 would be great. welcome to minidisc...you wont regret it

Yes, I'll back up kurisu on that, Claire. I just bought the Sharp IM-DR420 from Richer Sounds, it's a great recorder, possibly the best budget recorder of the current MD generation. It's cheaper if you order it on the net, but I paid £140 for it at RS. If your guy likes the Sony sound, and you can afford about £200, the Sony MZ-N910 would be the best, but don't go for a cheaper recent Sony - the output are much weaker than earlier models.

The trouble with Hi-MD is that it's not released until April - in the States. And we probably won't get it here until June at the earliest.

Cheers

Plain and simple if you're not interested in Hi-MD and live in Europe: Get the Sharp IM-DR420 [about 110 pounds]. That's all you need.

Claire I'm another user of the IM-DR420 and can vouch for the quality ...its awesome... can be purchased online here for £120 or less inc delivery see link below

Hi, I can also say the dr420 is amazing for the price. I bought a little electret mic for 13bucks and it records amazingly well.

Even cheaper than empire is amazon.co.uk which is 110 and free postage.

Sadly the Amazon offer means you will need to wait 2 weeks for delivery :wacky:
