Cleaning MD stickers

Has anyone had any bad experiences with any solvents to get sticky residue off of MDs? I'm wondering if the cleaner damaged the disc itself or caused any problems with a recorder/player. As reusable as MDs are, you sometimes have to replace their sticker labels, which sometimes leave residue.

Are there any blanks that allow you to write on the disc itself? Sharpies seem to do fine but the blanks I'm looking at all have logos, etc where I would write any disc information. It seems that a white color would be best as well. Or are there any erasable labels? I've seen those for CD-RWs.

I have occasionally used this stuff called "Sticky stuff remover" for removing label residues from floppy disks and once a plastic CD player. It works amazingly well and leaves a clean smooth surface, then you can wipe any residue off with warm water. Haven't tried an MD yet, but it should work, it's supposed to safe on plastics. You might be able to get some in a local hardware store...

There's "Goo Gone" in the States, too. It's basically just citrus-y lighter fluid (like Ronsonol) and works pretty well. I've used it before on MDs, taking care not to let any drip under the shutter. Let it soak through the paper label and use a fingernail to scratch it off. It may take a couple tries but it works nicely.
