I'm planning on buying a Sony MZR 35, 37 or 50 - my local discount Hi-Fi store has them as "display model" or "packaging missing" or similar all at the same (cheap) price. I'll be using it for ambient recording initially and probably some live music latter.

I know these are old machines so people will have some experience of them. Which one would you go for?

Many thanks in advance for your help and advice!

I would definitely get the R50. How cheap is cheap? This unit is probably one of the best SP-only Minidisc units of all time, as it features great recording options and a true line out! The similiarities between it and the R37 are slim, but everyone seems to favor the R50 more. It's built like a tank, too..

I would also recommend the R-50. That was one of the best units in the history of the lineup. Very sturdy. Big by today's standards. It uses a Li-Ion battery, I'm not sure about the R-35, 37 so that might be a consideration.

I wouldn't pay more than 50 bucks though. These are really old.

..and I would expect the same train of thought from mostly everyone, but on the T-Board they're addicted to that unit! I remember a time when a R50 [with the buzz in various forums that was being created around the unit and it's true line out] could fetch around $150 on eBay easy! It's a nice unit and all, but I really don't understand why anyone would pay such money..

I don't believe that price still stands, as Hi-MD is on the horizon.
