Hi-MD in Australia...

I read in the newspaper the other day (Next, in Sydney Morning Herald Tuesday 1st June, page 7, talking about different storage formats) that Hi-MD would be available at the end of the month. From the article:

"A more portable option is Sony's Hi-MD, the next generation of the Mini-Disc audio recording format. Due to be released this month, Hi-MD recorders can be used as a "drag and drop" external storage device - holding up to 1GB of data on a small $10 disk - as well as an MP3 player and a high-quality recorder capturing audio from analog or digital sources. Running on AA or rechargeable batteries, Hi-MD recorders are small enough to fit in the palm of your hand. They draw power from the PC when connected, but you still need to carry a data cable and, unfortunately, the drivers aren't built into Windows."

(any typo's in there are my own work, not in the article)

I suspected that this might have been incorrect on a few fronts (release date, MP3 player, drivers not built in), but today I was in a Sony Style shop (in Hornsby) and the guy there told me that they would be released at the end of the month (being June). From everything else I've read, I think that by MP3 player, they mean that you can transcode an MP3 to ATRAC3 or whatever, and that the drivers which aren't built in are the ones required to transfer music, not just general files.

In any case, there is nothing about it on the Sony Australia website, except that doing a search for Hi-MD brings up product pages like this:

http://www.sony.com.au/catalog/product.jsp?id=MZNH900

"HI MD 100X TRANSFER ATRAC3PLUS SILVER MZNH900

Sorry, no product information available "

(Which also say "This product is no longer for sale")

Anyway, that is what I learnt today, if anyone has any additional information (prices?), then it would be nice to hear.

Welcome to the "Sorry, no product information available"-World of Sony - Online...

It is a standard-phrase, when a product is not yet for sale.

Prices of units (Holland):

MZ-NH1: 479 € = 841,-- AUD

MZ-NHF800: 399 € = 700,-- AUD

MZ-NH900: 385 € = 676,-- AUD

MZ-NH700: 299 € = 525,-- AUD

MZ-NH600: 249 € = 438,-- AUD

From comparisons between Minidisc Australia and Germany on current units lead to the fact, that you can expect a surcharge of 50 to 80% for down-under...

PS: Before anyone jumps to conclusions, I don't think, that Minidisc Australia is more expensive, instead I think, the manufacturers are keeping the prices artificially high down there.

Apparently Sony Japan indicates the NH1's cradle is for battery charging only. However in the latest Sony Australia Pulse magazine, the specs of NH1 shows that it comes with a USB cradle (meaning there will be a USB port on the cradle)..., So did Sony Australia made a mistake with the specs or possibly the Australian NH1 will have USB cradle and the Japanese model won't? huh.gifunsure.gif
