HI-MD portable storage device?

I'm wondering how is the HI-MD used as a storage device. Does windows automatically pick it up as just an external device when you connect via USB, or is special software required for transfer to/from the minidisc. Can you connect it to any PC to move data to/from the minidisc?

Finally, is it possible to use the HI-MD to retrieve images from a digital camera via USB? It would be great to be able to transfer files from the memory card in the camera to the MD to free up space and take lots of pictures...

I think, that has been answered before, so I'll keep this short.

First, any Hi-MD-unit appears as USB-Memory-device. Driverless like an USB-Stick. WinXP/Win2K/WinME don't need drivers, it just appears as drive in Explorer.

Second, you cannot dump files from a camera directly onto Hi-MD.

Both are clients, and clients are not supposed to talk to each other. In Addition, the camera has to power the Hi-MD unit - In short, doesn't work.

Third, to transfer music to and from Hi-MD, you need the supplied software.

I'm getting that these guys appear as UMS units... awesome

My question(s):

Since they show up in explorer as a drive, I'm guessing you can drag and drop anything into it. However, to transfer music, one needs the supplied software. What's up with that? Is it not possible to transfer an mp3 file onto the drive then? Or it's possible, but it's not indexed somehow, and will not play?

Any minidisc does not play MP3 format files.

They can only play ATRAC(plus) formatted files. The softare converts them & puts them into a special area on the disc as an encrypted (Disc serial number presumably) file that can be understood by the audio playback inside the MD

well fortunately u can upload ur recordings to ur pc from MD

n having read the same reviews i think u missunderstood what they said they said

Atrac3plus is a great addition to the Hi-MD, even Atrac3plus at 64kps is better than Mp3 128kps. Overall this is a great product I recommend this over any Mp3 jukebox or flash player.

they just made a comparison ....

Technically they do support MP3 as the program that is used to pt the information onto a HiMD will convert from MP3 into ATRAC. I personally dont think they should use the word support as it can be misleading.

As to copying files from a MD

As far as I know this is possible for any recording made using the inputs on the Hi-MD (with Hi-MD formatted disc) unit BUT cannot be done for recordings put onto a HiMD via USB. So basically you cannot copy a CD onto it using your PC and copy it off somewhere else. However you can make a recording via Line-in and copy it off to ANY PC later using the USB cable to retrieve the data. All of this must be done using Hi-MD formatted discs. It will not work using the older format discs as the MD will be treated as a Net-MD then with all its restrictions.

Net-MD cannot copy ANY information off of the MD in a digital format.

I currently am awaiting my NZ-NH1 so I dont have a Hi-MD to play with.

The above is true.

You can copy files and MP3s to a minidisc, but can't play them. You can then copy them to another machine.

The only thing the player will PLAY is audio that has been recorded BY the unit, or recorded TO it using the SonicStage software. MP3 files would have to be transcoded by said software into ATRAC3 to be played by the unit.

hmm... some ppl seem to b confusing themselves...

Sony knows that mp3 is a widely used codec how could they not allow their software to b able to convert that codec into that which the MD uses.. if that's the case how could u say that the MD units support mp3 that's totally not true..and as for storing mp3s on the HI MD units n transfering them ..to me doesn't have much to do with support ..cuz the HI MD specs clearly state that the devices will b dubed portable storage devices for all file types.. with those facts in mind.. i don't c how a minidisc player which only plays PCM and ATRAC,ATRAC 2, ATRAC 3 n ATRAC 3 Plus support mp3 when it wasn't even created to manipulate the format.....

and Eydaimon

way crazey. I have no idea what you're talking about. Miss-post?

from that link u posted when i visited that page there were only 2 reviews available..so i don't c how i could have miss posted  :wacky:

It's simple: Support means, that you have a means to convert existing soundfiles into something the player actually plays.

That the hardware can't handle MP3s doesn't matter, the software can convert it and that's your support...

Easy, isn't it?

when you put it in that context you are right

but that's clearly understandable but from the statements i was just addressing what i gleaned from them

and then again i don't c the big deal about mp3 support that would have to b compulsary cuz that's the most widely used audio format isn't it? and i'm sure there r ppl with 90% to 100% of their music library in mp3 if sony didn't make SS capable of doing conversion from mp3 to Atrac then who would really go out n buy minidisc in the first place..?
