Guest Ascariss
Hello, great site and forums, helpful indeed. I am a previous MD owner, the Sony MZ-R900, it was a great model, but university came along and I needed tuition money. So I sold it and picked up another Sony product, D-EJ925. The discman was cheaper than the MD and it actually lasted longer with the supplied batteries, and with extra 2 AA's it went on for a long time. But the hassle of having only maximum 18 songs on a CD got to me, and I wanted more songs, or the ability to change the songs on a CD within one day without having to burn a new CD. So after 2 years I am going back to the MD. I looked at my options and I need something small when I am around the campus so I decided to go with the MZ-N10. I checked around town for prices and well it ain't cheap, except on minidisc canada. http://www.minidisc-canada.com/shopexd.asp?id=1 Anyone ever order of this site? It it worth getting this model? Any issues or concerns with it? My price range is around 350 Canadian and I am not sure if I should wait for a Hi MD recorder, but then I am leaving for europe in august and I am not sure if I will be able to recieve the Hi MD on time. Any help appreciated.
Christopher
If you were to order from that site I would go with either the unit you've mentioned or the MZ-NF810. Either would compliment your needs quite well.
Guest Ascariss
Thanks for the reply, I should know what I will be getting by monday since I am checking out some minidiscs here at the local stores.
Guest Ascariss
Picked up my MZ-N10 from A&B sound today, last one at the store, cost me a lot more with warrenty but it was worth it. I decided not ot buy online from minidic canada, because they didn't over this type of warrenty. I am charging it as I write this, will post a detailed experience later on. Christopher
I would love to hear your impressions. Asthetically it's a really fine unit. Please do yourself a favor and do NOT install Sonicstage 1.5, but Sonicstage 2.
Guest Ascariss
Well, it looks great, its small and light even with the extra AA case. Its a bit complex, lots of options which my MZ-R900 didn't have nor the discman. I am curious tho, if the internal battery runs out will this MD still run off the external one? I am uncertain since the MD uses firs the internal then external, so I would assume yes. Any ideas?
BJ
If the internal battery dies, you can replace it (there are instructions for doing so in the manual). Not sure how expensive the new battery would be, though... Otherwise, just leave it in the unit and use the battery pack--it'll work fine. Guest Ascariss
The internal battery is fine, I meant if it runs out and I can't recharge it will the battery pack work since it says clearly in the extra battery back, dry battery use impossilbe if internal battery exhausted. But the N10 has it like this, uses internal battery first then external, how can that be if the above contradicts that. Unless the the MD does use both batteries at once. And also pertainng to something I read on the forum a while back, the person mentioned that the battery pack charges the internal battery, it does not. But my discman was charged by the external battery pack, but it had 2 LR6 batteries though inline unlike the N10 which only has one.
aeriyn
I own a US model Sony MZ-N10. The powergrid draws off the Li-Ion first, until it is completely exhausted. Then it draws on the AA formfactor battery in the detachable battery case. The manual is very misleading about this. But trust me, I've done this before (when recording away from home I often toss on the dry battery pack). Unlike the MZ-R900, the N10 uses one battery, then the other. Because of the difference in voltages between Li-Ion batteries and alkaline dry cells, the unit has to draw off the Li-Ion first (since it's at a much higher 3.7V) then it switches to the AA when the Li-Ion is exhausted. The R900, with it's 1.2V Nickel Metal-Hydride "gumpack" cell, the voltages are much more similar, so it doesn't have to do any sort of electronic switching to use a different voltage cell. At least, this is how I believe it works. I could be wrong... But I know that the N10 uses the internal battery first, then the external pack second. mAjEsTiC
aeriyn : yup that's right...it runs the internal first then the external...
skyther
The powergrid draws off the Li-Ion first, until it is completely exhausted. The N10 will not work with the internal Li-ion flat. The battery has to be between "low power" and flat for the AA to work. The voltage difference has little to do with the power source. There are diodes in the unit that regulate power and stop reverse current flow.
