well now sony seem to want to compete amongst themselves or something like it. now what can we expect to happen to minidisc when sony comes out with a HDD player (NOTE it's not an MP3 Player nor would it be legit to say ATRAC player at this point in time because all supported formats haven't been mentioned yet) sporting 30 hours battery with 20 gigs of space. well i'm sure this is gonna make ipod users cringe or would be ipoders but do you think this have alteast the slightest capabality to cripple the minidisc? bearing in mind that this new unit is slated to debut before December and the long anticipated HI-MD is not even quite out of it's shell yet.

well we'll just have to see i guess unsure.gif

hmm..

some musings:

20 gigs doesnt take long to fill up - i think a lot of "serious" fans of portable music will want to have more than that... its not unlikely for people to want to have 100 or more 1Gig MDs filled with hi-fi tracks on hand.

I have at least 1000 hours of music in my personal collection, and it would be nice to have all of that available to choose from when i go for a bike ride.

Sure - its gonna take a while to even GET some 1 gig discs... but im eventually gonna fill up a LOT of them!

The other thing that comes to mind is that MD has primarily always been a RECORDING format. I dont think a puny 20 gig hard drive is going to affect the desireability of removable 1 gig magneto-optical media as a handy recording and archival solution.

i'm glad you made that point but i'm really thinking that sony will come up with a way to have the same recording capabilities of the MD integrated to the HDD it's not impossible but it just haven't been done yet and i do believe that the majority of md users who use minidisc do so for listening to music rather than doing recordings (opinion)* and you mention fulling up a disc rather easily hmm...well from my experience and others around me uhh...since the advent of MDLP the rate of purchasing blanks have decreased considerably compared to back when it was just 1.1 recording at the disc's rated time and i'm assuming that that rate might even decrease more for for those who plan on using minidisc for listening to music (mainly) and i know of some who would rather have their entire collection on hand rather than have many different lil discs to chose from (minidisc users)
