dex Otaku Posted August 9, 2004 Report Share Posted August 9, 2004 Recording data: * Captured 2004-08-08, approx. 15:15 near the pedestrian bridge at Brandon, Manitoba's Riverbank pedestrian/cycling corridor. * Recorded on Sony MZ-NH700 Hi-MD in LPCM mode [built-in mic preamp set to high sensitivity] using SP-TFB-2 binaural microphone with windscreens attached. * Transferred into Sonicstage then digitally captured to open WAV format using Total Recorder [lossless all-digital transfer]. * Some wind noise was edited out [cut/crossfaded] and a -12dB 12dB/oct 145Hz low cut applied [so it would sound more normal on speakers]. * The MD's transport seeking during writes is audible at some points. * Encoded to mp3 using lame v3.96 VBR "--alt-preset standard" Sample is available for download here: http://virtual.dyc.edu/~kurisu/2004-08-08-...02-60s_clip.mp3 Please do not play this as a stream from my server. Next perhaps would be Winnipeg. Hopefully at some point I can afford to get a pocket preamp with a lower noise floor than the one on the 700. To the file itself, nice atmosphere here, sounds very good. Only the mic amp adds quite a noise here. Hopefully at some point I can afford to get a pocket preamp with a lower noise floor than the one on the 700.Dex, you should learn to use a soldering iron, saves you quite a lot of money... Thing is, I don't have the patience to sit down and design a properly working battbox/preamp with the kind of specs I want. To be honest, the difference between the low- and high-sensitivity mics is small enough that for most of my purposes, it wouldn't make any difference. What I want to do is plug my microphones into an Edirol UA5 A/D converter, and then plug the digital output of that into the MD. The question is can I upload these recordings. As a test I'm wondering if you can plug any digital input, eg., from a CD, a computer soundcard, another MD, anything... And then see if you can upload this file. I'm sure Sony will never let us decode this "OMG" file, but as long as you can *play it* on your computer that is enough. We can "capture" using Total recorder or similar. Thanks for any help... dex Otaku Posted August 11, 2004 Author Report Share Posted August 11, 2004 Hi Richard, I have no way to do that, for several reasons: 1) I have no outboard A/D convertors 2) None of the sound cards I have support optical output 3) Even if I had something that did, no MD models in Canada come with the optical cable I'm sure it would work fine using the total recorder method, though. As long as you can play it in Sonicstage, it can be recorded. As far as I know, digital-source recordings can still be uploaded into Sonicstage. Point being that I have no devices with an optical out, and I don't have a cable to hook one up if someone loaned one to me, and I don't have the money to buy a cable or a device.
