The manual setting of the recording level - what's true

The Peter Ravn review says" The manual setting of the recording level can only be set during recording pause not while recording- Sorry (!) " Tha administraor of this forum seems to agree.

However, I have the 800 and I can during analog recording set the level during recording, not only during pause. The review is wrong, unless the European model differs from the American model. Does anyone who has used the 800 have a contrary experience?

The review and the news statement should be corrected, as it will mislead on this important issue many potential purchasers (I only care becaue I want minidisc to survive, which is made difficult when expert sites mislead).

The 700 I have, which I understand as being functionally the same as an 800 without radio, is the same - you have to have the unit in pause to switch to manual levels, but you can change the levels on the fly while recording.

I can't attest to the other models but I believe all the Hi-MDs support this, as there are now enough controls [with the shuttle wheel on every model] to support both volume control and rec level control simultaneously.

Irksome, yes. But every MD I've ver used worked that way, and until now you couldn't change the levels withouth pausing either.

Oh, sorry. Not every one. The ones that CBC had could be adjusted at any time, and had an actual switch for agc/manual.

I don't know why they don't make it a 'sticky' setting. Most of the people I know have been complaining about this on Sony's MDs for years.

Sony don't listen, do they.

Right, this seems to be a slight improvement. The last Sony I owned was an MZ-R90. On this unit, even when I went back into manual everytime I started pause Rec, the levels were in some random position. On my NH1, the levels and mic sens setting appear to remain the same. Atleast we don't have to reset 3 things (manual, level, mic sens); just switch to manual. But this is still not nearly as convenient and stealth friendly as my Sharp DR7.
