Disc spinning on ejection (MZ-NH900)

I've noticed on my new MZ-NH900 that sometimes, when I eject a disc, it rapidly spins in its casing for a second. I don't remember this happening on my old MZ-R55, even when ejecting while playing (I can't check, because I busted the eject button on that one...)

I've tried ejecting at various times but, unless I leave it for several seconds after the screen's gone blank, it still happens. I didn't notice this when I first bought the machine last weekend. Is this a fault? Are the discs being damaged?

Cheers.

I've noticed my NH700 doing this a couple of times. My solution has been to just wait until the unit is actually -off-, and to make sure to hit stop, etc.

I don't recall any of the older units I've used doing this. Perhaps it is a firmware bug in the Hi-MD series.

In the meantime, I'd suggest treating it like a CD Player: wait until it's off, when it should be fully spun down, before ejecting.

My MZ-N505 does it all the time, I personally see no harm in it. I've been letting the unit eject discs like that ALL the time, and I've seen no detrimental effects, however this isn't a Hi-MD, so I could be wrong, and it could be totally screwing up the disc to have it spinning while it gets ejected (Discs shouldn't spin! )

My MZ-R50 doesn't do this, probably because I actually have to hit stop, and wait for the optical block to return to its "resting position" before it actually opens.

Well my unit's just died - no sign of life in motor or display (It's not a problem with the power source). It will be interesting to see if the replacement I'm off to get has the same spinning "feature".

And I was just developing a theory that slowing the lid down with a hand as it opened stopped the spinning. Thanks for the responses - they're somewhat comforting!

My N10 spins down rapidly like you describe, I thinks it's because there's a very limited amount of time after you press stop where the disk is still spinning where you can press play again and it will start playing straight away. I absolutely always let it spin down first, since the spindle and the disk are rotating at a reasonably high velocity and I don't think it's wise to risk damage, plus it only takes a few seconds after pressing stop for the disk to stop spinning.

I haven't tried it with my NH1, and I probably won't.

I just wait two seconds after pressing Stop and that is usually enough for the disc to spin down.

However, I took some MDs for a closer look and most of the discs are constructed in a way, that the recording area doesn't touch the casing.

Exceptions: TDK RXG and the fully transparent Color series. Here the top surface can touch the casing. Add fine sand and you have a problem...
