Jimmix
It is known that SonicStage's codec differs from the ATRAC chip on the devices so , has anyone done a test to check the Hi-LP quality in analog/digital recordings?
dex Otaku
I've used it for recording from the radio [analogue, fm stereo] and it sounds okay for that. It is also [once again by analogue using binaural mics] decent for speech recordings. I wouldn't use it for most music recordings. Basically, if I know the source is pretty rough to begin with [as with broadcast TV/radio] then I'll consider using it.
jadeclaw
has anyone done a test to check the Hi-LP quality in analog/digital recordings?Yup. Quality is considerably better than SonicStage but still well below FM-Radio. Ringing and phasing effects are still well audible. High range is much better than SonicStage but the artefacts render it unusable for music. And the high range still breaks down, when the music becomes complex For me, LP2 is the lowest acceptable quality, but I have decided to use Hi-SP exclusively + PCM for special occasions. Jimmix
It's a shame SONY didn't include a LP2 equivalent in Atrac3+.....do you guys think it will ever come? Or you know why SONY took this aproach?
Qwakrz
All it would take is a small change in SS to support 128K AT3+. The players (as far as I can see) support most bit rates but only display Hi-SP or Hi-LP when fed with 256k or 64k into the codec.
dex Otaku
Changing the SS [software] codec would be relatively simple. Changing the hardware codec in all the players/recorders would not.
Breepee
Do you mean that recording from optical-in to HiSP delivers better sound quality than ripping a CD to WAV and upload it in HiSP to the disc?
Breepee
Do you mean that recording from optical-in to HiSP delivers better sound quality than ripping a CD to WAV and upload it in HiSP to the disc? Can anyone confirm?
dex Otaku
I can't confirm it re: optical in [as I have no way to test this] but my experience with test recordings made via analogue line-in are that HiSP sounds better as encoded by the recorder itself than it does from SonicStage. The same goes for every bitrate I've tried, actually. SonicStage appears to be optimised for speed, not quality. Mind you - the differences between SS's HiSP and the recorders' HiSP are so small as to be unnoticable to the vast majority of users. LP2, on the other hand, has a rather stark contrast between SS and my NH700.
[StrangeByte]
SonicStage appears to be optimised for speed, not quality.too bad... a "lame-like" quality switch would be nice
Jimmix
Do you think SONY will incorporate that kind of quality "switch" into SS sometime?
dex Otaku
If enough customers pressure them to, they might. I started a thread for a SonicStage wishlist/bugfix list here. Please put your $0.02 in!
