Burning files to a CD

MZ-NH1

Recommended Posts

Hi, I have read previous threads about this, but because I only bought my Sony MZ-NH1 last week I have no idea what all the Hi-MD talk is about. Can some one try and help me understand, how am I suppose to burn the files I have uploaded from my Hi-MD, onto the pc, and then burn them onto a CD, so I can then listen to them.

I am a trombone player and 1 of the main reasons why I bought this MD was because you were suppose to be able to record yourself, and then burn the recording onto a CD, but I have yet to be able to do this!

If you could explain what I have to do, it would be greatly appreciated!

Andrew

At this point in time, you can't do that.

Your linear PCM recordings are not recorded in the standard .wav format, but rather in Sony's OpenMG format complete with lovely Digital Rights Management, regardless of the fact that you recorded via analog source (microphone). The only thing you can do with them is make more MDs with them, or burn them to an ATRAC3+ CD for use in Sony's ATRAC Discman products.

The current method of taking digital recordings from the Hi-MD unit and placing them in a usable format is detailed here. Slow, and kind of a pain in the ass, but it works quite well.

Eventually, you will be able to strip the OpenMG from these files (recorded via analog source) with a utility that Sony calls the Wave Converter; the true test will be when the utility is released.

I'm sure this will put a bit of a bad taste in your mouth concerning that rather expensive NH1 you just bought. It's stupid that Sony didn't include full functionality for this sort of thing, but what do you expect... it's Sony we're talking about here.

One alternative (and this is throwing more money at Sony) is to buy a current model Sony Discman. You CAN burn ATRAC discs from your Hi-MD which are playable in current-model Sony Discmen.

(Actually, I'll have to confirm PCM-OMG compatibility with the D-NE discmen.)

Having bought a very expensive (compared to those large-capacity recording / drag & drop HDD players) NH1, veins may now be standing on your forehead. Unfortunately as aeryn says, until Sony rectifies this 'minor issue' as they term it, you're stuffed unless you invest in more Sony gear.

Thank you all very much for that info which I was hoping not to have to read! Basically the soul purpose I bought this MD was so that I could record myself, then put it onto a CD, so I can give it to teachers for assessments, or for other musical purposes! I will be going to Sony on the weekend and having a firm talk to them as to why they didn’t tell me this before I bought the unit, and to as when they are thinking the wave converter will come out! I even rang them to ask how to burn it to CD, their response – “Go into Windows Media player… and try it”!!! Thanks for your replies... Thanks for the link, I don’t think that is an option tho for me at the moment unfortunately!

My dad will be quite the annoyed when I tell him all this lol. Pretty much, a piece of equipment for $800 that doesn't really do what we hoped. :|

The iRiver's recording features are stunted at best, and known to have problems doing things like recording for longer than 30 minutes. See here.

Aside from that - $800AUD for an NH1 seems like a lot more than exchange alone should account for. Minidisc Australia advertises them for $679AUD.

I haven't had much luck getting information of any use out of Sony Canada, myself. It seems that their support people are totally uninformed on issues regarding HiMD.

Still, I'd suggest trying transfers using Total Recorder at the very least. It works very well, even if it is limited to being done in real-time.

Thanks very much for that dex Otaku, you are a great source of information!

Sony Australia, sells the MD for $800! I got it from another shop for $590, Microphone will be about $130, 3 x 1GB discs = $30

All up, around $750... gonna cry soon, if it doesn't work :'(

Sony would be very happy if we just accept their "recording device" without any complaints. But because their misleading advertisements for musicians and note taking students we have more than a good reason to return these devices back.

That should also put some more effort to make the wav-converter faster and taking it as a serious matter. I doubt that as long as we keep on buying these devices and not complaining by returning these things ripped off their packages, there will never be any wav converter.
