sxc
I noticed this FAQ on the Sony UK support website. Could this be the reason why some people have noticed that music recorded directly onto the Hi-MD sounds better than that recorded using SonicStage? Q3 : What is the difference between directly recording from a CD player and recording using the SonicStage software application? When you use SonicStage you can record at high speed; however, "TYPE-S" is not supported for the transferred (checked-out) stereo music. http://www.sonydigital-link.com/DNA...en&m=hi-md#Q2_3
aeriyn
It's more than that. Also, that's kinda dumb too, since Type-S DSP is a decoding DSP and has nothing to do with recording. Type-R DSP is only in reference to original ATRAC 4.5R recordings (SP mode). The main difference between realtime recording and using SonicStage to encode tracks is that the realtime ATRAC DSP has a lot of time in which to encode, so it does it with the best possible quality available to the codec. SonicStage, however, encodes primarily for speed and is not nearly as good at retaining the fidelity of the original recording. This was such a dumb move on Sony's part; they really should've made it selectable whether or not you wanted to encode for speed vs. quality. sxc
I wonder if there is a flag in the OpenMG file that tells the Hi-MD player not to use its special Type S decoding when playing it back. According to the Sony UK website, that;s what it sounds like.
mutant1345
hmm...hey cori i had to do real time recording via analog in port no mic before i used the net md usb port (didnt have a puter at the time) and once i was able o record on the md via usb and i thought it sounded lots better than analog??? i didnt use the new ss at the time it was the omgjuke box...same thing diff program i guess...but it still sounded better must of been the recorder or sumthin

That is lossy. However, if you were to record in realtime via the optical line-in, it would be a fully digital transfer and would be lossless (save for what the ATRAC encoding did to it).
