emalvido
Hello board I was a member of the mailing list somewehere in time 1998 to 2000, had to vanish for a while.......Wedding plans etc...... lately I have regained my MD needs, and almost forgot how awesome is! My gear: I have a Sont Deck MDS-JE520 Sony MZ-R90 Sony MZ-R50 I have a problem with 80 min discs only, here it is I record whatever with the R-90 and playback on the JE520, it doesnt play! you have to press FF and in the 1-2 minute range it starts to recognize the disc, plays but skips constantly, then you haveto press again the FF other 1-2 minutes and the disc plays fine! we are talking about like 4 minutes of skipping etc..... and now............ If I record with the R-50 then playback on the JE520, it works perfect! What is going on! Is there a procedure for correcting this? please help Ed :-)
jadeclaw
The R90 possibly has a dirty lens. Had the same problem with a S38. After carefully cleaning the lens, it recorded fine again. Also check the recording head for accumulated dust and clean that carefully too. The head is in the lid, exactly above the lens. On a sidenote, the recordings made with the dirty S38 skpped on all homedecks but my old banged up R37 played them fine...
mutant1345
yes and i believe they have minidisc lens cleaners (like cd lens cleaner cds but with a minidisc sized cleaner) you put the minidisc cleaner into the player and it brishes up the lens i would try that if nothing else
Bananatree
Do discs recorded with the r50 play well in the r50? I have heard about recordings being different in different recorders due to heads being not uniformally placed. This could create your skipping. emalvido
Hello Zombietycho Discs recorded on the R-50 play well on the same R-50 Ed :-)
jadeclaw
I would try the cleaning first, it sounds like the narrower track pitch of 80 min. discs just pushes the whole thing over the limit. If that doesn't help, then maybe the focus alignment might have to be corrected. But that should only be attempted by a trained technician. jadeclaw
Hmm, I say Focus or Laser Power has to be adjusted. After looking into the Service manual, I conclude, is has to be done by a trained and experienced technician. Or use the R90 for mobile playback and the R50 for recording.
