native linear PCM use ?

Folks

Is there a way to directly import "native linear PCM" from a high MD into a sound editor ?

I'am quite aware of the limitations of ATRAC but I would think that PCM should be easily readable...

I do most of my editing using ProTools on a Mac, but have access to a PC if SonicStage is the way to go...

Thanks & regards

Alex

PS: Sorry if the question sounds naive, but I am curretly wondering about purchasing this pupy...

Hi and welcome to the forums.

Currently, this is the 'popular' way to upload Hi-MD recordings (including PCM) to PC in .Wav format. We're also waiting for Sony to release an official "Wave Converter" add on to SonicStage which they've promised (well, sort of)...

By the way, try using the Search button (I'm supposed to say this as a mod)... rolleyes.gif

Hello

Thanks for your very prompt response

Actually I *browsed* through that thread...

Just wondering... assuming that linear PCM is just that (i.e. uncompressed raw sound) and that the HI-MD can be "mounted" as a hard disk what would be the problem of importing sound recordings directly into an editor ?

I'm pretty sure that there are very valid reasons why it's not doable... just trying to understand them !

Regards

The audio portion of the disc works like a virtual partition on a partition. I don't know if you understand those terms, though.

Basically, the audio part is separate and is locked down by Sony's DRM.

I am currently using an NH700 for exactly what you described [location recording, dumping to the puter, editing].

Not quite sure to understand.

I was inferring from the first part of your post that it was not possible, i.e. that you could not directly re-read a recording on your computer, due to DRM limitations even on you own recordings...

Please enlighten me :-)
