Hudson replied to Hudson's topic in Technical, Tips, and Tricks
Cheers for that. -
Does anybody know if this 6 MD changer can be used on this head unit ? It says you need a BUS connection to use it ...... Also it says it has a digital in ........ Bit out of my depth here.

Top Class Headphones for MD & Headphone Amp
Hudson replied to Hudson's topic in Technical, Tips, and Tricks
Cheers for that, i also got recommended the Denon D2000's. -
Cheers for all the opinions guys, i will make some SP recordings on my Sony 909 and see how they compare to the recordings i already have which were made a few years ago on my Sony 920 full sized deck. I will also be upgrading my headphones (see separate post) to try and get the very best out of my portable MD listening.

Top Class Headphones for MD & Headphone Amp

Thanks for that, so if i only listen to MD via a portable player/recorder (Sony 909 at the moment), will i be able to connect an amp to this and use a higher end set of headphones ? Also all my recordings will be in SP, will this mean the recordings will sound a lot better or will the higher end kit just bring out some of the flaws that come with any kind of compressed recordings. Thanks Also what set of full sized (over the ears) headphones would you recommend for just listening at night from a portable MD player. -
Just what headphones are you guys using for your MD units and if you get some of the really good stuff (Grado etc) do you need a headphone amp and if so, what the hell are they and how do they help ? Reading reviews of the real top end '' over the ears '' headphones they keep mentioning the headphone amp..... i have a sennheiser set at the moment, not too expensive and bought to watch tv and movies. Thanks

Cheers for the all the opinions, i am still unsure whether to get a new one for recording purposes only and then use the discs to playback on my 909, or just go for the full sized unit, although the size of the unit is an issue because my tv stand with my centre speaker and amp etc is a little bit full of kit. Yes or no, if i record in standard SP on the RH-1, will it be as good as a recording on the 980 ?
-
Could i just quickly ask about a feature on the RH-1, I understand you can disable the volume limiter on the unit ? Is this true ? A review mentioned that this may only be possible on the USA units..... seems odd if this is true.

Wow guys..... my brain is in overload, i must confess to a rather lower level of knowledge than most of you on the forum. I had thought (incorrectly it seems) that when i simply plug my digital cable into the back of my '' digital out '' on my Sony 725 DVD player and the other end into my '' digital in '' on the MD deck.... thats it. No conversion at all, just nice and simple transfer of the CD onto the MD (with a bit of compression via ATRAC). It appears i have been labouring under false information for years. I do fancy going for the RH-1 simply for the PCM, but then all my standard MD recording would seem '' less '', like the jump from standerd def tv to high def.... after that can you really go back to watching Lord of the Rings in anything else !!!
-
I thought that should be the case given the physical size of a portable recorder (how ever smart) and a standard sized unit, i will not use microphone or the net. I simply want to transfer my CD collection via the optical lead to my MD's in either SP or PCM (Dependent upon size limits). The needs of most people to get as much music on a disc or flash memory (aka MP3) as possible is not my top priority. ........ Sound Quality is my first and second consideration, nothing else comes close. I don''t take my MD players outside but use them to listen to my fav albums either in bed or whilst reading a magazine etc, so again, portability is not an issue. Thanks for all the quick responses to my posts, i am really impressed. I have seen new RH-1's for sale at the sort of price i would pay for a QS930/940, so it's decision time really.
-
Thanks for that, i have a 909 due to arrive soon in the post, i had thought of buying one (they seem to come up quiet often in the uk) just for the recording side of things, because if i don't then it's a full sized unit the likes of the 930/940, but i just want the very very best sound SQ to go onto my ES white discs and then hopefully my playback will be at the best quality i could have mustered.
-
Just exactly how good is this model, would the recordings made on it sound as good as ones made on say a full sized deck the likes of the QS940 ? And i am a little baffled by the PCM side of things, if i recorded a CD on a 1GB disc as this PCM rate would i only get one album on the whole disk ? Also is there any difference in the recording quality and playback quality of this unit over and above say a 909 portable recorder if recording at the normal SP rate. Thanks for any help, i did have a 920 a few years back and have '' re-discovered'' my portable MD player and just how damm good the sound quality is compared to MP3.
-
Thank you very much for the prompt reply, the reason i am looking at getting back into MD is the sound quality over MP3, I do have an Ipod and for bobbing around the town etc it's fine, but i listen to my MD portable player when relaxing in bed, going to sleep etc, so the portability of the music is not important. Having one CD on each MD disc is just fine, the swapping over of each album is again just fine. I had been thinking of getting the RH-1 for the recording duties but am unsure if the quality at standard SP will be the same as the full sized units like the 940.

I live in the Uk and am about to buy a full sized minidisk recorder, i have been looking at the 980 but because i will never record in LP or anything else, then do i really need the ATRAC Type S chip ? I only ever record in SP for sound quality reasons, i will not ever download music from the PC/Net so will the 940 give me the same quality as the 980 ? Also just as an extra, would the portable Sony MZ-RH1 Hi-MD player recorder just as good a discs as the full sized machines ? Not in PCM but in SP ? Thanks
