    Volume "Hack"

I think some recently asked this exact question! Try this: http://www.anythingbutipod.com/archives/20...imit-unlock.php The member who unlocked theirs did it really easily and quickly and said it made a noticeable difference. No reason why it shouldn't work for you too
  2. Thanks for that. I found some useful info in there. Nice to also know that it's sturdy enough to survive a machine wash!!!. . . not that I'll be trying it
  3. Ohhh, lots of sympathy. . . have you tried the reset button yet?
  4. For $100 you can pick up a pair of Denon AH-C551. I just bought some as backup for my AH-C700, but the reviews suggest they are very similar to the C700 in sound - deep bass, forward midrange and slightly less treble than the C700, which might be a bonus if you have any sensitivity to treble. The Denons have really nice aluminium housing which makes them feel nice and solid.
  5. None of the models from the 7xx series and onwards is volume capped (as far as I know).
  6. Yes it will. I use the 808 with it, and the 818 is exactly the same build, only the software is different. It will definitely work with it. And you won't be disappointed with the sound quality either, it's very impressive for such a teeny thing.
  7. OK, I concede - I am not very observant. I have been using the Colliers Wood tube station for over 10 years - and it was only after a program entitled: "The most ugly buildings in the country" that I realised one of the top ten was actually the building behind the tube. It's enormous, grey, ugly as sin, and is visible from anywhere in the area - except to me, who had never noticed it before. . . after 10 years
  8. The only ad I've seen on TV is the one with a million musicians playing, and at the end it says "sound like no other" and shows the 818. But it doesn't explain any of the functions/features that make it such a good buy. If it was me, I'd have an ad where loads of people throw their crappy stock headphones in the bin in disgust - and then one of them puts the Sony headphones on and jumps with joy. . . and then laughs at the poor people who chucked the crap ones out! Hmmm, maybe that's why Sony haven't asked for my help in marketing LOL. Although the ad is interesting - it doesn't give away any information. By the way, I was on the tube last week going to Oxford Circus and didn't notice any ads - so I'll have to keep my eyes open this time!
  9. I know, it's crazy. When something is this good, and receives consistently good praise - you think they'd be desperate to market it. Especially since so many people were waiting for SS to be dropped. Who ARE these invisible marketing people?
  10. I meant to say that I bought the clear case to help bulk it up a bit as it was too skinny without - and I prefer the feel of in the case! Also, your comparison with the iPod volume doesn't surprise me at all. My b/f has a Zen Touch which he listens to at 95% volume, and when I tested it, I had it set to about 80% - and that was to get the same volume as 50% on the Sony. Although the specs look weak, they don't tell the whole story, as the 808/818 pack more punch than other players with higher specs.
  11. Nice to hear you're enjoying it so much. I enjoy mine a lot (A808). Sony has really rocked with these gems. There are over 30 5-star reviews on Amazon UK for the 818 compared to about twenty something for the 808 (which has been around for a lot longer), and the only difference is that SonicStage was dropped. So it's good to see a Sony player finally getting some well-earned recognition without losing 'stars' for the software.
  12. My battery lasts about 20 hours, and when it gets down to one bar - it goes on for hours afterwards. It's possible you left it on, I've done that a couple of times. But it seems you'd had the player on for over 6 hours before one bar droppped? That sounds about right.

    NWD-B105

Well, after all the hassle trying to get my laptop to recognise it, I finally connected it on a different computer and managed to use and test it. I bought this as an easy-to-use first ever dap for my sister-in-law. I knew she liked the Sony sound and when these drag and drop players came along, it seemed like the perfect first choice. So, in real life it's more plasticky than it looks in photos. But I think that's OK as it was clearly intended (I think) to be used more casually (gym etc). The headphones are pretty appalling, and the size of them. . . they're like frisbees! I couldn't actually fit them in at all, and the only way I could 'test' the sound was to hold them to my ears very tightly. Even then, at 192kbps, the sound was nothing to write home about. But when I tried the A808 headphones, the sound was markedly improved (still not top notch, but a huge improvement on the frisbees). When I tried it with my Denon C700s, I was encased in a wall of sound - so I can see that the B105 has great SQ potential, but only with higher-end headphones. I was quite surprised the sound changed from below average with the frisbees, to at least 8/10 with the Denons. My A808 never sounded below average with any headphones, so the B105 is very sensitive to what headphones it's paired with. I've given her the ones that came with my 808 so at least she has something to use until she decides if she wants to buy some more. The display is clear enough and the buttons all work logically All in all, I think it's an ideal 'first' dap for anyone who wants something easy to use and doesn't want to be overwhelmed with complicated software. I wish I'd had something like this for my first player. My first Audiodream was so complicated to use, that I used to listen to the same folder over and over again. I couldn't get to grips with it at all, so this 'lipstick' Sony would have been a really suitable first stepping stone into the world of portable audio. Now I just have to hope she likes it
  14. ascariss is right - gapless only works from the original source. Converting to atrac from another format will NOT work. I found this out to my cost

Does the 616 have the same thingybob (sorry, can't think of the right word) fitting on the bottom like the 808? I'm wondering if it would fit on the CPF-NW001.
  16. I don't have mine anymore, I returned it and bought the wi-fi-less one for £39! I gave up with trying to install the software for the wi-fi one almost immediately. It got more complicated with each stage. I knew there'd be problems with it because I'd read the frustrated reviews at Amazon beforehand (but wasn't planning to use the wi-fi part anyway, just thought I'd load it and see how far I got. . . result, not far!!) Did you read the reviews at all? I think other people might have mentioned the same problem as you. On a side note, when I went to get the link for you - I noticed that the CPF-NW001 was now £75.77 so glad I got my second one yesterday when it was half that price! http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-CPFIX001-Wire...s/dp/B000K9DMDS

My b/f just came home so I'll check on his laptop. Thanks for the tip. EDIT: Just tested it on his, XP Pro (mine is XP Home) and my Windows is up to date. As soon as I plugged the player into his laptop, it was recognised as a disk drive immediately, so it must be a problem with my configuration? My main concern is that my sister-in-law will have the same problem. When I put it mine, it dings 3 times and does nothing, no icon, oh well

Thanks Ascariss - but I already have WMP 11 installed on my computer. But even if I didn't, I wouldn't be able to access it from the player as it is not showing up anywhere so I can't see any files until it becomes visible.

    NWD-B105

So I bought this for my sister-in-law 2 weeks ago and it just turned up! I promised I would set it up for her and test it out as it's her very first mp3 player and I wanted to get it ready. Well, thank God I did, or I suspect she'd have dumped it already! I've just plugged it into the usb port as per instructions - and all that happens is the dreaded yellow ? pops up and the computer starts trying to download software for it - an mtp error??? It is not visible in 'My Computer' and I can't get it recognised at all. The unit is operable when it's not plugged it, ie; homepage, settings etc are available, but it won't connect. Windows Media Player can't see it either, and as it's supposed to be an easy drag and drop device, I'm at a loss to know where/what I'm doing wrong. According to the 'quick start' guide - as soon as it's plugged in, Windows should ask what I want to do, then I'm supposed to select "Open folder to view files" - but I'm not getting that option, only the one I mentioned. Can anyone help? I want to start charging it and I can't even do that!!
  20. David, funny you should ask - but I have one particular album on my player that does the reverse. It has a 'front' cover in the library AND on the player - but it displays the Walkman cover when I plug in the device!! As I can see it on the player - it makes no sense why I can't see it on the device when it's plugged in, but I've long since given up trying to reason with SS. Can you confirm a couple of things? 1. You can view individual track cover art ON your unit? 2. You cannot view the MAIN album cover ON your unit? 3. Does the screenshot you posted contain the 'individual art' for each track? Is that the album you were referring to before, or did you use it as an example? 4. You're using a jpeg or bitmap file? 5. Where exactly CAN'T you see the album art appear?
  21. David - silly question, but have you tried downloading the cover from somewhere else and then reapplied it again? I have 3 covers that refuse to display on the player no matter how many times I apply them. I must admit I am too idle to practise my own theory by downloading the cover from somewhere else, so I've given up for now. But it's something you might want to try? Oh, and I assume you've already tried physically dragging the album art on to the main cover in the library? Then you'd get a message asking if you wanted to assign the cover to all the tracks. Sorry if I've said the same things as other people, but I sped-read the posts, and forgot them immediately. . .
  22. Sorry, when I said I'd 'gained' 4 notches, I meant I had 4 more to play around with, like the 30/40% you referred to. The scale stayed the same. With the HD5 - the 'instructions' are in Sony's own service manual online, but I saw people charging for the free info LOL. When you Google A1200, it doesn't come up, but I figured the A1000/3000 used the same method. Anyway, main thing is it's done now.
  23. That's not good news. I don't have those headphones, but the ones I do have also have a no-clean filter grill. How long does it take to clog?? I'm trying to be careful with mine and never put them in my pocket or leave them lying around. I did pierce them gently the other day - very very gently. . . but it's not a great method of de-fluffing! So, in essence - non-cleaning filters belong to essentially 'disposable' headphones????
  24. You did it already?? That was fast. How much difference in 'notches' did it make? When I removed the limiter from the NW-HD5, I gained about 4 notches worth of volume - not a lot, but enough to make it acceptable.
  25. Chris, this link is for the A1000/3000 but it might work on yours too http://www.anythingbutipod.com/archives/20...imit-unlock.php
