  1. In my best Ted “Theodore” Logan: “Whoa”. One person has decided to deal with the removal of the OtherOS in a different way: by requesting a refund. A member of the NeoGAF forums named iapetus decided to take some action by requesting a refund from Amazon UK where he purchased the console.
  2. After wondering what the big reveal would be from the Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker completion ceremony
  3. Well, what I am sure nobody thought would happen or Sony wanted to happen is about to happen. Geohot aka George Hotz has found a work around for the removal of OtherOS: Custom Firmware. Geohot has dubbed his firmware “3.21OO”. Based upon his blog entry, it won’t require opening the PS3, and will be possible by restoring a custom generated pup file. Below is his video demo: What’s really interesting is that he said it may add OtherOS functionality to to the PS3 Slim, although this hasn’t been tested as of yet but will be soon. At this time it only applies to those on firmware 3.15 or earlier. He did have this interesting thing to say to the community, which we at Sony Insider eluded to earlier: Note to the people who removed OtherOS, you are potentially turning 100000+ legit users into “hackers.” There was a huge(20x) traffic spike to this blog after the announcement of 3.21. If I had ads on this site I guess I’d be thanking you. Who knows what the future holds for the PS3 scene moving forward. One thing we do know is that over the course of just a few days, the game has seriously changed Related Posts:PSP Go Hacked With Custom 6.1 Firmware By Team TyphoonSony PS3 Firmware 3.21 Causing Problems?Sony Ericsson To Reveal Android XPERIA Phone On November 3rdSony At CEDIA 2009 Round UpSony VAIO X Gets a Hot Promo Video View the full article
  4. The XPERIA X2 debuted late last year and is a smartphone of the XPERIA series by Sony Ericsson. Features include a 3.2-inch touchscreen, a sliding arc keyboard, 8.1 megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, GPS and 3G, among others. It runs Windows Mobile 6.5 and the home screen can be customized to the normal Windows 6.5 home screen, XPERIA panels, or an isometric pixel art city. Some mobile phone news sites have suggested that the XPERIA X2 may be the last Sony Ericsson phone to use the Windows Mobile operating system, as Sony Ericsson concentrates its efforts on Google’s Android platform, and Symbian OS. Surprisingly, Sony Ericsson has released a rather large update for the X2 which improves many aspects of the phone. According to Aaron at the Sony Ericsson Product blog, the update “brings performance and stability improvements throughout the device and introduces several new features as well.” We were quite impressed with this update, and hope that Sony Ericsson continues to offer large updates like this for other devices in the future. SE recommends using the Update Service application to facilitate the XPERIA X2 software upgrade. Here is a list of some of the changes: MR1 is built on a new core platform release from Microsoft including a newer version of IE6 Stability improvements are everywhere with focus on SlideView, Panel manager and TileWave Performance improvements focused on rotation and touch performance, the camera, web browsing, the software keyboard and audio streaming New features are added like FM radio, Video calling, Auto-lock and Fast GPS which allows for a faster first fix to the GPS signal SlideView 2.0 gives better usability throughout with a fresh design; and new actions are build in like new/reply/delete/edit capabilities in messaging and calendar. Music scrolling/searching and the mini-player have also been enhanced The new dialer took a big step forward with four easy buttons giving easy access to the dial-pad, favorites, call activity and contacts. 5. Sony has announced its “Road to Zero” global environmental plan. The plan, which includes a long-term goal of achieving a zero environmental footprint by 2050, uses backcasting methods to set specific mid-term environmental targets for the next five years in line with that goal. Sony’s definition of zero environmental footprint is not only limited to the neutralization of carbon emissions, but also extends to waste and use of finite materials such as oil-derived virgin plastics. Targets are based on four environmental perspectives – climate change, resource conservation, control of chemical substances and biodiversity – across all product lifecycle stages, from research and development to recycling. The mid-term targets will be implemented globally across the Sony Group beginning in fiscal year 2011 (April 2011), and will extend through the end of fiscal year 2015 (March 2016), at which time new targets for the following 5 years will be set. Specific mid-term targets include: 30% reduction in annual energy consumption of products (compared to fiscal 2008) 10% reduction in product mass (compared to fiscal 2008) 50% absolute reduction in waste generation (compared to fiscal 2000) 30% absolute reduction in water consumption (compared to fiscal 2000) 14% reduction in total CO2 emissions associated with all transportation and logistics (compared to fiscal 2008) 16% reduction in incoming parts packaging waste (compared to fiscal 2008) Increase of waste recycle ratio to 99% or more 5% reduction in utilization ratio of virgin oil-based plastics in products (compared to fiscal 2008) Assessment of impact of resource procurement and facility construction on biodiversity, and promotion of biodiversity programs such as groundwater cultivation Minimization of the risk of chemical substances through preventive measures; reduction in use of specific chemicals defined by Sony; and promotion of use of alternative materials “We are fully committed to putting our innovative spirit and technological expertise to use to help solve environmental challenges,” said Sir Howard Stringer, Chairman, CEO and President of Sony Corporation. “From the development of new materials and energy-efficient technologies, to the introduction of better processes in manufacturing and production, we will work aggressively to meet the ambitious targets we are setting for ourselves and, at the same time, establish a model for others in our industries to follow.” Sony has already made significant progress in reducing its environmental impact around the world. Sony’s European sites, for example, have reduced their CO2 emissions from electricity use and facility heating by approximately 93% between fiscal years 2000 and 2009. In addition, the majority of its BRAVIA TV range now carries the EU ‘flower,’ an eco-label introduced by the EU to certify greener, more environmentally friendly products that comply with strict ecological criteria. Sony Europe is also a founding member of the ‘European Recycling Platform’ (ERP). Fully operational in 11 European countries, the ERP effectively manages end-of-life collection and recycling for all consumer electronics products. In 2008, approximately 60,000 tons of electronic waste were collected and recycled on behalf of Sony in 20 European countries. In the U.S., Sony Electronics (SEL) was the first consumer electronics manufacturer to institute a nation-wide Take Back Recycling Program in 2007 through which consumers can recycle any Sony-branded product free of charge. To date, SEL has recycled more than 13,000 tons of electronic waste through its take back efforts. In Japan, Sony is the only company that voluntarily collects used small-sized consumer electronics on an experimental basis jointly with a municipality, Kitakyushu City in southern Japan. Gold, silver, bronze and palladium are extracted from the products discarded by city residents and are subsequently reused by Sony. For example, the recycled gold was used in Sony’s semiconductor chips that were then adopted for use in Sony Ericsson’s “URBANO BARONE” mobile phone (available in Japan through KDDI Corporation since February 2010). In addition, the new VAIO W eco edition, launched in most major global markets this year and designed to be the industry’s most environmentally friendly laptop, features recycled plastic parts, an electronic manual and an innovative carry-bag that saves 10% in CO2 emissions during production. Sony Pictures Entertainment, based in Culver City, CA, took an important step toward its zero waste goal in June 2009 by partnering with the City of Culver City in a first-of-its-kind organic waste composting program. Thanks to this program, the studio has already diverted up to 80% of its waste from landfills (as of December 2009). In addition, an estimated 8,559 set pieces were reused in 2009, saving over a million pounds (500 tons) of material and helping reduce impact on natural resources. That same year, the studio recycled 81 tons of electronic waste. Sony’s fiscal year 2015 targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and power consumption per product were reviewed and approved by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) as a renewal of the company’s Climate Savers Programme commitments. Sony has been a member of the WWF Climate Savers Programme since 2006. The Programme was organized by WWF International to mobilize companies to cut greenhouse gas emissions. In a tweet, he had this to say: On Wednesday, there will be a big Peace Walker announcement. I don’t think you can understand the enjoyment of Peace Walker until you’ve played it, but I believe you’ll feel a hint of sorts about ‘where is it a new Metal? Right now it’s anybody’s guess, but hopefully we get more details from the Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker completion ceremony being held today. 7. Sony Pictures Entertainment Chairman and CEO Michael Lynton spoke last month at ShoWest, the nation’s largest convention for the movie theater industry, and basically urged for healthier snacks at their concession stands in addition to their traditional offerings of candy, popcorn and soda. He noted that “adding healthier options to your existing menu is the right thing to do for our industry, for audiences and for our country.” Lynton said a poll of moviegoers commissioned by Sony Pictures revealed: two-thirds of moviegoers and three-quarters of parents are more likely to buy healthy snacks at theaters if they are offered; forty-two percent of parents said they would buy concessions more often if healthy options were available; sixty percent of parents said having healthier snacks in theaters would enhance their overall moviegoing experience; Lynton said he was not asking theaters to stop selling popcorn, soda and candy. “Audiences love them” he said. “I’m just talking about adding some healthier items to what you already sell.” Lynton also announced that the Alliance for a Healthier Generation has offered to meet with the theater owners “and offer advice on how to change your menus in a way that makes sense for your audiences and your business.” “The private sector, including the theater industry, has the ability to improve the access families have to healthier foods and beverages,” said President Bill Clinton, founder of the William J. Clinton Foundation, who co-leads the Alliance for a Healthier Generation with Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and American Heart Association President Clyde Yancy. “The Alliance brokered voluntary agreements with the beverage industry that resulted in an 88 percent decrease in beverage calories shipped to America’s schools in just a few years. We are eager to work with the movie theater industry to craft similar agreements to provide healthy concession options in movie theaters.” “In order to turn the tide on the obesity epidemic we are going to need to make soup to nuts changes in the number of calories we take in and the calories we actively use. Because kids are eating and foraging at home, school, sporting events and at the movies, changes are needed everywhere,” said Dr. Neal Halfon, professor of pediatrics, public health and public policy at UCLA and director of the UCLA Center for Healthier Children, Families and Communities. “We can’t expect kids to make healthy choices if they aren’t given healthy choices to make. And while this is a nationwide problem, and will require support from companies with a national stature like Sony Pictures and large theater chains, it will also depend on the ingenuity and commitment of local theater operators to make the difference in their communities.” In a videotaped message to the convention, Dr. Mehmet Oz, vice chair and professor of surgery at Columbia University and host of The Dr. Oz Show, said, “Everyone enjoys popcorn and a soda at the movies, but there are healthier alternatives. Good nutrition doesn’t mean eating spinach at every meal. But with so many children and teens going to movies so often these days, I think we’ve got to be mindful about what they’re eating and drinking, and giving them the chance to choose healthier food makes a lot of sense.” Lynton said theater owners should consider taking this step because childhood obesity is an epidemic, it’s the responsible thing to do for audiences and society, and it’s good for their business because it would help families enjoy theaters even more and, by giving them healthier options, more snacks will be purchased. Regarding what kinds of snacks might be offered at theaters, Lynton said, “I don’t think giant tubs of spinach or broccoli’s a good idea. And nobody wants to eat cauliflower while watching Spider-Man, or drink a 40-ounce cup of prune juice.” He said moviegoers suggested to the studio’s interviewers the kind of snacks they”d like to see: fresh fruit, fruit cups, apples with dip; veggies with dip; yogurt; granola bars and trail mix; baked chips, apples chips and unbuttered, air-popped popcorn. Lynton said some people sneak healthy snacks into movie theaters, like a granola bar or a box of raisins, which represents an untapped market for concession stands. “People are consuming food differently these days. In fact, many of your theaters are located near Starbucks and Whole Foods and in malls and other places where consumers are now finding more nutritious food and beverage options. Audiences would love both a great theatrical experience and terrific snacks.” Lynton said employees at Sony Pictures are offered a subsidized healthy lunch special and expanded salad bar at the studio commissary. He noted some theaters are moving in the direction of offering healthier foods; some use canola oil instead of coconut oil for their popcorn. He also said he understands that some things “will prove to be logistically or economically impossible…But even small steps in the right direction can have a big impact.” Related Posts:Sony To Bring Last Broadway Production of Rent to TheatersSony Pictures To Fully Embrace 4K TechnologySony 4K Coming To Muvico TheatersSony To Deliver 2009 BCS In Gorgeous 3DJim Kennedy Promoted To Executive Vice President At SPE View the full article
  8. Principal photography began Friday, March 26, in New York on Columbia Pictures’/Sony Pictures Animation’s hybrid live-action and animated family comedy, The Smurfs, it was announced by Bob Osher, president of Sony Pictures Digital Productions, Hannah Minghella, president of Sony Pictures Animation and Doug Belgrad, president of Columbia Pictures. We wrote about the movie last summer, but more details have emerged. Audiences everywhere are in for a Smurfy good time as the Smurfs make their first 3D trip to the big screen. When the evil wizard Gargamel chases the tiny blue Smurfs out of their village, they tumble from their magical world and into ours – in fact, smack dab in the middle of Central Park. Just three apples high and stuck in the Big Apple, the Smurfs must find a way to get back to their village before Gargamel tracks them down. The film is set for release August 3, 2011. Neil Patrick Harris, Jayma Mays, Sofia Vergara, and Hank Azaria star on camera opposite an all-star voice cast. Anton Yelchin will play Clumsy Smurf; comedy legend Jonathan Winters, who voiced roles in the “Smurfs” television series, will voice Papa Smurf; the adorable (meaning I LOVE HER) Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Katy Perry will play Smurfette; Alan Cumming will play Gutsy Smurf; “SNL’s” Fred Armisen will voice Brainy Smurf; and George Lopez will play Grouchy Smurf. In the live-action roles, Azaria will play the Smurfs’ nemesis, the evil wizard Gargamel. Harris and Mays star as an expectant couple whose lives are turned upside down when the Smurfs cross over from their magical village to New York City. Vergara plays Odile, Harris’s boss, a cosmetics executive. The film is directed by Raja Gosnell. The screenplay is by J. David Stem & David N. Weiss and Jay Scherick & David Ronn, based on the characters and works of Peyo. The producer is Jordan Kerner and Ezra Swerdlow, Ben Haber, and Paul Neesan are the executive producers. Commenting on the announcement, Minghella said, “We’re thrilled with the way our cast has come together. Raja and Jordan and the entire team working on The Smurfs have developed a film with tremendous heart and great comedy and now we have a dream cast to bring the movie to life.” Adds producer Jordan Kerner, “What a wonderful journey this has been. The time is right for an adventure that will thrill fans and introduce the blue heroes to a new generation, and the technology is here to allow the three-apple-high Smurfs to appear in all their glory on the big screen and in 3D. Columbia Pictures has been magnificent at every turn in their commitment to get The Smurfs to the screen. Our partners at Lafig, including Peyo’s daughter Veronique Culliford, have been with us in the creation of the story and characters every step of the way. It’s a real thrill to begin shooting and working with our compatriots at Sony Pictures Animation. Just wait – the blue invasion is coming!” Related Posts:Live-Action/Animated Smurfs Movie Coming In 2010Cloudy With a Chance Of MeatballsSpiderman 4 on IMAX May 5, 2011“Grown Ups” Coming Summer 2010 With All Star CastRebooted Spider Man 3D Coming To Theaters July 3, 2012 View the full article
  9. α (Alpha) digital SLR users can now enjoy even more control over creating beautiful, low noise images with the latest release of Image Data Converter SR v3.2 software. The latest update features new algorithms that significantly reduce image noise at high ISO settings when converting RAW data to JPEG files. Processing is most effective at ISO 800 and higher, delivering impressively natural results with minimized color noise right up to ISO 12800 (depends on DLSR model). The new algorithm is effective when converting RAW file or cRAW files (depends on DSLR model) to JPEG files produced by all current and previous model digital SLR cameras by Sony (excluding DSLR-A100). Image Data Converter SR Version 3.2 is part of the Image Data Suite that also includes Image Data Lightbox SR Version 2.2. Supplied free of charge with all new digital SLR cameras by Sony, the enhanced bundle now also offers support for Mac OS 10.6 (Snow Leopard). Click here to download the new update from Sony. This is a link that came from Sony Europe that ties back into a download at sony.net. Oddly, Sony’s e-support site doesn’t have it listed. I gave it a shot and was pleased to see it installed the full version hassle free, and I was quite interested in the functionality. The software seems like a good compliment to Photoshop, as it even allows the two programs to work together. What do you think? What would you add? 10. Sony Japan has detailed two new variants of the feature-rich DSC-W350 Cyber-shot camera. These variants, known as the DSC-W350D, are available in silver and pink and have rhinestones embedded on the front of the camera. Sony aimed to have the surface coating of the pink unit to shine like pink satin. There is also a special coating around the lens ring on the pink version, which is made of a transparent material that is supposed to look like crystal. The silver DSC-W350D aims to look a bit different than the usual dull silver cameras out there and has a “sophisticated rhinestone dot pattern” that provides a “simple and elegant design.” Apparently the ring around the lens on the silver version also is very shiny. Expect these to launch at a price of Y27,000 on April 23rd, and it hasn’t been confirmed outside of Japan. Sony also detailed two cases that will be available for sale when these cameras launch called the LCS-WJ. It has rhinestone decorations like the cameras and patterns that accent the metallic frame. Within the case, elegant patterns are embossed on the cloth to give it a truly unique and stylish appearance. The DSC-W350D features a 14.1 megapixel sensor, Carl Zeiss 4x optical zoom, 2.7″ LCD, iAuto, Smile Shutter, Face Detection, Optical SteadyShot, Sweep Panorama, and 720p HD movie recording. DSC-W350D

  13. We have seen a number of different shapes coming from the VAIO Division from VAIO X505 slimness to VAIO TP roundness, so Sony added a new VAIO to its line that will feature minimalistic design and pack the latest computing power behind its form factor. I’ve been lucky to play with it some and share some pictures with you all. I cannot disclose any more info at this point (being under NDA), but can say that this small VAIO is pretty cool looking piece of technology and will attract a lot of attention. It does have DVR capabilities with cloud storage on Sony’s servers, will stream seamlessly HD to any VAIO in your house (equipped with VAIO Media Plus or Gallery software), access to PlayStation/Qriocity platform will enable this device get the latest flicks on your Bravia. Cell processor is powering the OS that Sony has adopted (Linux integration) and your Windows OS will run under Intel’s undisclosed next gen chip. It will also have integrated features corresponded with the upcoming Sony devices that will be announced later in the year (think VAIO Touch enabled platform).
  14. As part of its initiative to improve the profitability of its LCD TV business, Sony announced a new strategic alliance with Taiwan’s Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. Ltd. (“Hon Hai”) for the production of LCD TVs for the European region. Based on this agreement, Sony will sell to the Hon Hai a portion of its shares in the Nitra factory (legal name: Sony Slovakia, spol. s r.o. in [state of Nitra, Slovak Republic]), which currently manufactures LCD TVs for the European region. Following the sale, the Hon Hai Group will hold about 90% and the Sony Group will retain about 10% of the shares in the Nitra factory. The employees currently working at the Nitra factory will be assumed by Hon Hai upon the completion of the transaction. The Nitra factory will continue to be a key location for the production of Sony LCD TVs for the European region. In addition, Sony Supply Chain Solutions Europe, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sony, will lease a portion of the Nitra factory, which will remain a logistics center of Sony Group in Europe. The parties intend to complete the sale by the end of September 2010, subject to regulatory approvals in several countries. 15. Sony has revealed a revolutionary new design in mobile computing with the VAIO Signature Collection Compact Series. The Palladium is 7.5″ in diameter, and this small PC walks a different path than the netbooks and iPads out there with unbelievable features never seen before. Sony states that it has “ground-breaking technologies such as integrated 4D, Mirror Mode, hologram webcam, and a breath-powered battery.” The addition of 4D is truly astounding – apparently Sony has figured out how to integrate mist and odor effects as well as vibration. I can only imagine the cost associated with refilling these sensors, akin to ink cartridges. Can you imagine going to the SonyStyle store and picking up an odor cartridge? Sony also embraced the dark side of the force with the integration of a holographic webcam, which enables you to have those Holonet conversations with the Emperor that you’ve always wanted. Simply take your Super-Star Destroyer out of the Asteroid field and make crystal clear holo-conferencing calls through an upcoming Skype upgrade. This is also a great accessory for your AT-AT driving Generals, who can receive your command to destroy the Rebel shield on those far away icy planets. Another wild feature is the hover touch keyboard, which allows you to browse the web, type e-mails and launch applications by simply hovering your finger over the keyboard and controls. Talk about the ouija board of the 21st century. You can also swipe the keyboard and the screen will turn into a lighted mirror. Sony added an auto airbrush function in the reflected image to help you look at least ten years younger. The breath-powered computing functionality in the Palladium could be one of the biggest environmentally friendly evolutions we’ve ever seen in computing. With the breath-powered battery and adapter, you’re only “a few puffs away to a fully-charged PC.” Who needs to smoke a cigarette when you can power a computer instead. 19. Sony Pictures Entertainment sold a portion of its investment and certain ancillary rights in its HBO Latin America joint venture, which owns and operates certain premium pay television businesses in Latin America, to an affiliate of Time Warner. Prior to this transaction, SPE owned approximately 29% of this joint venture and, after this transaction, will own approximately 8%. The cash proceeds from the sale were U.S. $217 million, and the sale is anticipated to result in a pre-tax gain of approximately U.S. $200 million in Sony’s consolidated financial results for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2010. After the closing of the sale, the parties submitted a filing with the Brazilian competition authority. In the event the Brazilian competition authority does not approve the sale, the sale of the Brazil portion of the investment could be subject to rescission, in which case approximately 40% of the purchase price (and the corresponding pre-tax gain) could be subject to rescission. In January 2010, in a separate transaction, SPE sold its investment in its HBO Central Europe joint venture, which owns and operates a premium pay television business in Central Europe, to another affiliate of Time Warner. The sale resulted in pre-tax gain of approximately U.S. $45 million in Sony’s consolidated financial results for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2010. The impact of these gains on sales was incorporated within the outlook for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2010, announced on February 4, 2010. These sales are in keeping with SPE’s strategy of focusing on and investing in its majority and wholly owned network operations across Latin America and Europe. SPE will continue to provide its content to the HBO pay television businesses in Latin America and Central Europe. 20. Multi-touch is an enhancement to touchscreen technology, which provides the user with the ability to apply multiple finger gestures simultaneously onto the electronic visual display to send complex commands to the device. It was truly popularized by the iPhone, which allowed users to pinch, zoom and other commands by using two fingers. However, it has been unclear as to if the XPERIA X10 would ever have multi-touch. Sony Ericsson product manager Rikard Skogberg has stated on the official Sony Ericsson product blog, “there?s no multitouch in X10 ? and I also can confirm that it?s not only related to SW but also to HW. 21. There is a certain amount of Geek DNA that was required to run Linux on the PS3 from the start. Over time that changed and guides and easy installers were made to take advantage of “Install OtherOS” and it became much easier to do so. The problem now is that the geek community is like the NRA: number wise very small in comparison to who they lobby against, but extremely vocal. That segment of users were some of the ones touting the PS3 in forums, fan boy circles, and online. So that segment now feels betrayed, hence the reason why the lack of SACD support didn?t generate such shockwaves in the community. The addition of Divx/Facebook at this point are enhancements, but they don?t really differentiate Sony from anyone else operating in the console space. They are simply things that have become common place. Linux access to the Cell, although very restricted and controlled was a powerful option. It gave that core group something that they were more than happy to generate free publicity about, and that group did buy hardware, and fell in love with the console. Given the statement of what you lose if you don?t upgrade (i.e. PSN access) it gives the impression that by wishing to retain your Linux access, you are somehow doing something you should not. Akin to 360 users being banned from Live for playing pirated games. Not the same by any means, but again, it?s that perception amongst many that is being circulated, and while not entirely accurate, it casts Sony in a negative light. It is true that as a whole Linux has not been a significant revenue driver for Sony’s Playstation brand. Modifying the GameOS required modifying the OtherOS to ensure compatibility between the two, and that when you have to segment resources to support something the majority aren?t using, it makes sense at some point to discontinue it. Couple that with George Hotz gaining some serious ground very quickly, one can see why Sony is taking a move like this. Right now, in the next generation Sony has the longest streak of being the console that is not compromised. But look at what this has caused. Previously, George Hotz was not going to do anything more than release his exploit according to his own blog, and then let everyone play in his sandbox. Now he is behind creating custom firmware to maintain the OtherOS feature, the very thing Sony doesn?t want. If everyone gets behind this, and views the OtherOS as a martyr (which is happening) it?s going to do nothing but force piracy as a backlash. Or at the very least find more exploits that previously might not have known. The other problem is that not only does this feature removal come so suddenly, so swiftly and the most inopportune time given Sony?s amazing buzz. Sony is leading PS3 sales in Japan, analysts predict the PS3 is going to sell more than all other consoles, people were excited about the Playstation Move, and now Sony is being viewed as the evil company who takes away features. Along with that there is nothing to replace it. If Sony wanted do a little, give and take, the perfect idea would be one thing: Divx 7 certification. True it would support mkv, and there is a strong reason why Sony would not want to do that. However, many other vendors are starting to do it as well, and the PS3 would be the only console to support it. That would get many in the geek community, the vocal ones, behind Sony again. The Playstation Blog is quite the interactive community, filled with many people who are frank and open. Sony engages their users more than I think anyone else does, via chat’s, message postings etc. PlayStation.Blog Share is a great initiative, which formally allows anyone to submit their best ideas on how Sony can improve all PlayStation products. It?s also a place where you can discover and vote on other people?s ideas, as well as communicate with us and other PlayStation fans about how to bring great ideas to life. Those 100’s of people who post comments, are your town herald. Why not engage them, why not mention what is going to go away and solicit responses on what should replace it, is it Divx 7, is it Boxee support, is it a better flash experience and the restoration of real Hulu support? If that isn’t good enough, look at the top requested items on Share – Cross Game Voice Chat, Software Emulation for PS2 games, Auto-Syncing Trophies. Take things a step forward by creating a timetable for when these features will be added (if possible). All eyes are on Sony now, and they have a real opportunity to do something here and spin this to their advantage, but will they? In addition to full access to the thousands of apps available through the Android Marketplace and the Android 1.6 operating system, the X10 will also be pre-loaded with Vodafone 360 apps for MyWeb and Vodafone Music. We’re still a little confused why Sony Ericsson is shipping the phone with Android 1.6 when the OS is officially at version 2.1..but its like that everywhere. Even the US version, at least reported at this time, will ship with 1.6 as well. There have been some theories that they might push an update soon though with additional fixes. Check out our hands-on with the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 post from CES 2010. The Sony Ericsson X10 launches on Vodafone UK April 2nd and will be available for free on monthly contracts from 35 pounds Sterling (24 month contract), with 900 minutes, unlimited texts and 500 MB of mobile internet. Regardless, the Android-powered X10 can be easily integrated with Google services, such as Google Mail and Picasa as well as Facebook and Twitter, making it easy to keep up to date with your mates on the go. The Google Maps Android version is truly on par with an expensive navigation application. It even has voice and 3D view. Very brilliant. The X10 packs a massive 4 inch touchscreen, great for video, playing games, surfing the web and viewing pictures. And with an 8 megapixel camera complete with face detection, it’s great for taking pictures too. It’s also loaded with a 1GB MicroSD card, which can be upgraded to 16GB, and offers both HSDPA/3G and Wi-Fi connectivity. The Sony Ericsson X10 is one of a range of great new Android handsets that Vodafone UK customers will soon be able to choose from, with the Google Nexus One, HTC Legend and HTC Desire also scheduled to launch soon.
