  1. Exactly. 1GB HiMD discs have been commercially available for far longer than any other removable formats. And look at that price per GB!! Although I guess one reason why Sony may have decided not to persue the HiMD disc format in this way is the power requirements necessary to write to the discs - constantly in the case of video camcorders. SD cards? Nope, I'll stick with Compact Flash thanks I wonder if there's any news up the MD pipeline in the next few months?!
  2. I don't believe MD is over. Sony still have an opportunity to rescue the format as something for the semi-pro users. A couple of AWESOME Hi-MD decks would just be amazing - especially coupled with the new SonicStage functionality. My dual-tray Sony CD recorder deck would be on eBay in a flash! And maybe a 2GB disc capacity. Certainly this doesn't look great for Sony. Losing out in Japan. With the iPod being so moron-proof, and SonicStage being a nightmare, maybe they should ditch their line of HD / flash players and concentrate on the semi-pro market with MD? If I was to buy an HD-based player, it wouldn't be a Sony (but it wouldn't be an iPod either). Come on Sony! I remember a time when there were rumours about minidisc-based video camcorders. Way before any of the new digital video recording media were around. Imagine a disc format where you use the same disc for your data, video, music and photos. Pop it in the slot of your new PSP and there you go. Minidisc could have been resurrected on the back of PSP success. I can only assume that they seriously considered that before they went UMD. So Sony lose their home market. Shame, but maybe it'll teach them a lesson they won't forget.
  3. This is well good. Not thought of doing that before!
  4. I was messing around with my European MZ RH10 when I first got it, and changed the language to an asian one accidentally - didn't mean to press ok. Took me ages to get it back!! On my RH10 there's a languages menu with... English French German Italian Spanish Then 3 asian language variations So I guess you'll be fine. I did hack mine with the service mode at the start though - gives you access to a full equalizer. This is only necessary on European ones though. Here's the link to the service mode to unlock European models. http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?showtopic=9752 HTH
  5. When I bought my MZ-RH10 early last year I went for a month or so before buying a Hi-MD disc, using conventional discs formatted as Hi-MD for MP3 storage. Bought a Hi-MD disc from a Sony centre store for £5 I still notice stacks of conventional MDs in places like HMV and stuff though. £6.99 for 10 though, that's awesome. Most of mine are Sony Premium (the brown ones) 74mins. Dixons used to have a good deal running on those back in the days. (about the only thing I've ever bought from Dixons) Come on Sony, don't give up on MD. I want to know about this exciting announcement in April!!
  6. I have only the 1 HMi-MD disc full of mp3s. I record from DAB radio onto conventional 74min discs at LP4 using my MDS-JB980s using the optical input. Must have about 150 normal MDs.
  7. I use my MZ RH10 as an mp3 player all the time. Can't say I've noticed a difference from my old mp3 player. I've never really bothered with the LP formats, most of my old-style MDs are all 74/80 min SP. They do sound much better than mp3s though. I don't think there's anything to worry about with regards to mp3 quality.
  8. WOW!!!! I've been away for a few days and I've just seen this! This is such a massive step in the right direction. Congrats to Sony!!! I just hope it's not a "final update, make it really open, then move on" effort by Sony. I guess socstage will continue to be developed though, with the HDD players. I'm so glad I bought my MZ-RH10 early last year. Even with the SonicStage restrictions, and only being get mp3s onto the device with SonicStage, it's been the best spend on gadgets I've ever done. Especially considering it was the top-of-the-range 2nd gen, at under £160 from Amazon UK. Now Sony has to build on this momentum - there might be a future for HiMD! My HiMD feature wishlist... - An update in capacity of HiMD discs. 4GB would be unbelieveable, 2GB would be amazing, though 1GB is still great for me! - A selection of HiMD deck models. (I WOULD LOVE THIS!!! - being able to record linear PCM straight onto HiMD then drop the wav onto my computer hooked up to it. SWEET!!!) I've got an MDS-JB980s but I've not used the NetMD / USB on that for about 2 years. I think I only ever used it a few times as well, then realised OpenMG Jukebox was cack. - An external drive for computers, USB bus powered. If sony were clever about this then they make it so you remove a few bits of plastic, and fit it internally into a 3.5" drive bay using a usb header on your motherboard. You have swappable-fascias as well, black, silver beige. That would get HiMD into windows media center territory. - Therefore a HiMD slot on the PS3 would be an obvious step. So you can play your discs in your living room take them round to mates houses. Playing the HiMD disc, whilst playing the PS3 game would be cool. - A car head unit (I'm not so bothered by this, but it would be a big deal for many people) - FLAC playback support (the best lossless format IMO - it's open too!) - A stand-alone HiMD driver, so you don't have to use SonicStage - An OSX version of a stand-alone HiMD driver - Atrac plugin for winamp - Advertise For people to buy HiMD rather than iPod, Sony needs to tell people that HiMD exists. Walk into waterloo station in london and there massive iPod adverts everywhere. Never seen a HiMD ad in the UK before. I've got a pretty specific idea of this stand-alone driver - someone suggested it on earlier pages and I think it's a killer idea... Being able to drop music files onto the drive in my computer, and also being able to copy / delete tracks from the device directly from within my computer. Setting up of groups, well you just make folders and put the music in there. When you copy tracks off the HiMD device it just copies them off as WAVs. They need to make the driver, fast, no-nonsense and professional. I'm not against using sony software, if sony developed this driver it would be amazing. They can still build-in whatever DRM they wish into the driver. SonicStage has improved so much, but for convenience and speed I'd love to see drag & drop in my computer.. And work on a version for OSX with exactly the same functionality. I think there'd be a few mac music professionals who'd be up for this!! If Sony had skipped NetMD and just gone with HiMD back in 2003 - would the ipod have been so popular? Doubt it. And if they'd have chosen to use a HiMD-like technology for the PSP so you could play your HiMD discs on it. They've got a great opportunity to nail HiMD with the PS3 though - imagine a HiMD slot in your PS3, how sick would that be?? Go on Sony, nail it!!!
  9. About this time last year I was in the market for a new portable digital music player having got fed up of using a nokia phone for a year. Bought the MZ-RH10 and my opinion was totally reversed. I was on the verge of giving up on Sony, but I still love this product (there are a few niggles, but it works and sounds great). Also SonicStage 3 is a massive step up from OpenMGJukebox that I used with my MDS-JB980s deck. All we need now is a well nice Hi-MD deck. Please?
  10. If this does happen, maybe sony would release the source to the open MG format To me this problem seems like it's of their own making I don't think there would have been an ipod in sight if sony hadn't insisted on OpenMG and atrac with the NetMD devices Imagine just drag & drop mp3 support with NetMD 3/4 years ago! Can't say I'm too surprised at this news though. HiMD just seemed too little, too late. A last ditch effort by sony to make a bit of money Though I stll bought a nice MZ RH10
  11. My recording was done on the unit using the mic jack
  12. Anyone have any info on power use of different remotes? Does it make much difference to battery life? I would have thought remotes with backlights would drain the battery more than the plain remote that comes with the US & Euro versions of the RH10

  14. Hi guys Just tried this on my old G3, running OSX Panther 10.3 MZ-RH10 Just made a PCM recording and connected it to my Mac, all the MP3s on the disk were listed with titles, and my test recording was listed at the bottom, I didn't bother titling it. Unfortunately it's greyed out and won't let me download it - the same as the MP3s listed in the window Won't let me delete it from the disk either So it seems there's just a Sony DRM restriction in the import software The device was recognised straight away, even as a removable drive for file storage. I've never even bothered trying my MD units on my Mac before Just thought I'd let you know HTH Ben EDIT Just to let you know, the recording uploaded fine in SonicStage on my PC and it is Linear PCM
  15. Yeah I thought I was totally going mad. So the RM-MC41EL doesn't exist. Wow the white RM-MC33EL on that ebay page would look pretty special with the black RH10 Though it's a bit too iPod for my liking. I think the RM-MC40ELK is the one. Big display, jog dial. I guess the larger back-lit display though will put more of a drain on the battery? Anyone done any tests on this? How much extra power would the remote with the display draw compared to the one supplied with European & US units (no display)? Glad I've got the link for the remote comparison - been looking for something like that for a while on here. Thanks guys Ben EDIT: In fact just checked out the seller buyfromjapan on ebay uk and there's one on buy it now for $78.00 Bought it just now
  16. Ok the RM-MC40ELK seems like the one I was after What's the difference between the above and the RM-MC41ELK?
  17. Yeah I've found that too, but even then it's not reliable. Just strikes me as being a bit shoddy for Sony - which normally is great! I'll try being more precise on the fwd button. Generally I just use my remote now though. At least I know it's not a one-off problem and that other people are having the same trouble. Thanks Ben
  18. Hi guys I've got an RH10 - but being in Europe (UK) I don't get the good remote. I currently use me RM-MC11EL off an old NetMD portable I had, but I'd like to get something more recent. I liked the look of the RM-MC41EL that came with the MZ-NH1 http://www.minidisc.org/images/sony_mznh1_remote.jpg I really like the idea of having a jog dial on the remote, rather than a barrel-style button to twist or click. Will that work ok with the RH10? Is eBay my best bet at getting hold of one? Thanks Ben
  19. Hi guys I've had my RH10 for over a month now and it's awesome. Yes still have to use SonicStage but at least it works now. A minor irritation is the menu - why? A separate display button would have been killer. My problem is this... Fast forwarding and rewinding through tracks doesn't seem to work too well. If you hold the >>| and |<< buttons down to hard, you skip to the next track, or it bookmarks the track. The bookmarking of the track is weird as that happens if you hold down >/ent in the middle of the 'd pad' It's as if it's pressing the play button everytime you also press the fwd and rew buttons Works fine on the remote Just wondered if anyone else was having problems with the >>| and |<< buttons I heard that some people are having similar malfunctions with the volume buttons. Can I send my unit off for free from the UK to get this problem fixed? It happens every time I try and fwd and rew through tracks. Thanks Ben
  20. Yeah I'm not a fan of the larger ones. I just use spare old-style slip cases from other discs.
  21. Hi-MD video does sound like MD might finally have come of age. Digital camcorders recording directly onto a 5GB Hi-MD disk. mmmm When Sony does electronics well, they do it very well.
  22. Ok guys not to worry - I've found my solution. No it's not possible. A mod can delete this thread. Sorry Ben
  23. Hi guys I've had an MDS JB980(s) NetMD deck for a few years now. I love it - it's an awesome bit of kit. I use it to timed record off internet radio using my custom built media centre PC (yeah!) But I've just bought an MZ-RH10 HiMD portable. Pretty satisfied - I knew the limitations and problems but recording quality is superb. I've heard of problems when uploading recordings made using in Hi MD onto a computer using sonicstage. Is it possible to upload recordings made on a normal format disc using my MDS JB980 (LP4, using the optical digital input on my deck), to my computer, using SonicStage with my new MZ RH10? I'm having trouble. I keep getting an error in SonicStage saying "Unable to transfer to the computer" Is it possible or is this a limitation?? No big deal (although it would be nice), as the reason I bought my MZ RH10 was to edit these recordings on the move. Just wondered if it was possible to upload. Or I wondered if this was just the oddity people had found when trying to upload from HiMD. Thanks Ben
  24. Ok so I ordered the MZ-RH10 It arrived today. I thought, I know, the minidisc.org forums have a new version of sonicstage, newer than the 3.0 on the CD. So I downloaded and installed, and had the problems detailed in this post. Being able to use my computer to move files to my hi-md drive (E:), SonicStage recognising NetMD discs, but not recognising HiMD discs. So I uninstalled and tried the suggestion of installing the German version, then 3.1 over the top. SonicStage didn't even load. So uninstalled and installed the one off the CD - and it works! I thought i'd spent £160 on a piece of junk. So if anyone's having problems, then give the original CD a go.
  25. I really like the look of the MZ-RH10 though. And that's only £150 on amazon. Bargain. I really want 2nd gen HiMD - easier MP3 use. I like that remote - might try and get hold of one. Anyone know if it would be compatible with MZ-RH10?? I assume so - at least basic functions. What's the part number for that remote with the NH1??
