Have a Hi-MD question that doesn't need a thread?
efenili replied to Christopher's topic in Minidisc
I gots me a question!! Sound Quality: CD > MP3 vs. MP3 > Atrac3plus Now since you are converting from compressed to compressed, is it going to suffer? Obviously ripping from CD to Atrac3Plus is what I want to be doing, but with the MP3s I do have what kind of quality of sound am I going to get using the new Hi-MD devices. Will I lose anymore quality from MP3 to Atrac3plus or with the quality of the sound bit remain essentially the same?? -
because of the people who told us july I doubt this is true. I figure datavision had an automated thing setup for what they thought was going to be the release date.
-
that narrows it down  Thnx for all the suggestions, what are you using ?? if any of them?

Some Sony Hi-MD units delayed in US till late July.

Is there even talk about the models after these ones? I am in the Clie world as well and Sony releasing new models in 5-6 months was not uncommon. My Brand new Clies got outdated so fast it wasn't even funny. But if the Hi-MD does what it says it does, there will be no need for me to update just like there was no need for me to update my NX70. But with 1GB discs and only 20groups, if a new one came out with larger discs and unlimited or many more groups I would be butt hurt  -

Late July eh? God damn this keeps getting further and further away from my birthday. -
I was going for the NH1 but I am looking into the NH900 too. I really want to remote though. Getting the NH1 remote with the NH900 would be AWESOME!! I will use it primarily for music playback.

I want to know which is better. I am going to get one of these two headphone sets along with my Hi-MD when those come out. I have read through this forum and the E3s seem popular. Now the Sonys I can get for around 100 and the Shures about 140. But thats not a huge issue if its worth the extra 40 bucks. Feel free to let me know of other headphones under 150 in the same category as these two. -Ed

When computing numbers from hardware to software its very easy to get confused. Simply putting 48 into 256 is not going to give you any real numbers. You can't just look at the quality of the music when determining how much space it is going to take up. I can think of a number of reasons why your numbers are off but im not informed on this kidna stuff..so its just my thoughts Onto this thing about what windows shows. This has been an arguement for a long time which has a pretty simple answer. Windows uses a binary system of numbers which is different than a lot of mediums. Like your hard drives and memory sticks I guess your zips as well are going to give you a rating where 1,000KB = 1MB, 1,000MB = 1GB. This is where they get their numbers to rate their cards. Windows instead uses the number system where 1,024KB = 1MB aand 1,024MB = 1GB. So you can see why you think you are losing some data. There is also the simple fact that every card/hard drive is different so you can a variety of numbers all around each other. Anyways, just saying that a lot of storage used in windows doesnt use the same number system. Windows should be saying Mebi and Gibi but whatever. one kibibit 1 Kibit = 210 bit = 1024 bit one kilobit 1 kbit = 103 bit = 1000 bit one mebibyte 1 MiB = 220 B = 1 048 576 B one megabyte 1 MB = 106 B = 1 000 000 B one gibibyte 1 GiB = 230 B = 1 073 741 824 B one gigabyte 1 GB = 109 B = 1 000 000 000 B Not sure why I just wrote all that, but its good info to have none the less:) -
I contacted a Sony Rep directly and she said early to mid June.

What are the accesories yall use for MDs and which are expected for Hi-MDs?? -
I have been reading reviews and forums all over for about a month now on portable Hard Drive Mp3 players. More often than not when compared to say portable CDplayers, even the highest quality they could get on the Iriver or Ipod was not even close. The word most often used is "disappointed" A few even explained they are waiting for SONY to jump on the HDD mp3 player train and get some good sound out. I hope that this advertised "Like CD quality" is really what it says. I am still pretty far away from Iriver or Ipod and wanting to get the Hi-MD when it comes out. Anyways, just thought I would give you what I have read a lot of lately.

I sure hope that its larger. With my extensive collection and incredible range in difference between music genres and artists only being able to seperate into 20 groups would be a HUGE HUGE factor in whether or not I purchase one of these devices. Thats simply because I only want the device to listen to music...the recording aspect while a nice addition is not a focus for me. I guess we will see.

if groups are what I think they are...then 20 is a crazy low number!!

Hi-MD Accessories. What are they what do they do. As many as you can list. If there aren't that many listed yet, what are your predictions for accessories depending on what has been released for earlier versions! -
Its seems like a simple decision to me, and Sony went with the smarter choice. For the amount of people that will complain about the limit, there are probably 10x as many people that would have complained about not being able use the 30 discs they already have. -Ed

I plan on getting a recording unit (ie MZ-NH1), Thnx for the information on the minute per disc thing. That seems more than reasonable for me. I was also curious, I am guessing the units will each come with one 1gb disc? And how much would additional discs cost? If this was answered in another thread no need to respond, I will find it eventually. You can post link I guess. Thnx for the replies !

As I jump into the mini-portable music field I find myself in a bind. I can get great deals on Hi-MD products when they are released and with the larger 1Gig or more discs the playing time is becoming better. Only after coming hear daily and reading, I find that most people love their MDs because of its ability to both record and play audio files. My only use for the product would be playing audio. I have more than enough music to fill one of these 20gig+ portable hard drive MP3 players but I really fansy they MD players. With the 1gig, how many minutes is that of Atrac3 audio playing? I guess what I am trying to get at is WITHOUT recording, is the MD still a good choice if I just want to listen to music?? I hope so, they sure look a whole lot better.

Well I needed the Prodcut Numbers so that I could an order, not for more information. She works for the playstation division so...she doesn't have a lot of information on other electronics. So I am guessing the product numbers would be like MZ-NH1 ? Thats the one I want btw. With 30% off, its not a bad deal.

Does anyone know the product numbers that they Hi-MD devices will use when released in the US. Reason being is I have a cousin who works for Sony who I would like to check on them so that she could order me one when they come out. I don't know if they exist yet, but any help is greatly appreciated.

I just recently became interested in MD stuff. I am in the market for an MP3 player. I don't need more than 1 or 2 gigs, I hate those who drive ones. And I don't fancy the really small ones that use memory sticks of some kind. I need a replacement for my CD/MP3 player that can fit in my pocket. I have decided to wait for the release of the Hi-MS to purchase. Having inside help from a few friends who are employees I hope to get one fast and with a nice hefty discount. I am in line I guess!
