Ey.... exact same reason. I play violin (and guitar) and wanted something portable which I could record and listen to which wouldn't be so bulky. However, I got the mznh700 model cause I didn't really need the extra features and would rather save up the money for something useful (or keep it for the next gen models if they have something useful and revolutionary - like unlimited transfers back to pc *fingers crossed*)

does the subraction rule still apply? i mean, "adding" to a frequency used to cause noise back in the old days... does it apply to today? me personally, i don't use the equaliser. rather tweak the files as waves on the hdd and then put it on md with the settings i like.

sounds pretty cool, but since I've got the mznh700, I don't want to connect the usb port all the time. That protective cover looks like it will snap off with even normal use! has anyone had this happen to them with any recorder? and i don't mean because you ripped it off either.

sigh, i just wish sony would just stop acting like an over-protective mother!

Are you trying to connect through a usb hub or direct to pc. make sure it's not a hub of sorts because while they allow multiple things to connect via usb, the voltage is reduced for each output. The MD requires the full 5v.

I just wish sony would allow us to record in 132kbps while in Hi-MD mode (and I mean live-recordings) I would like that option to be able to go half-way and still be able to make a MD->PC transfer!!!
-
this is intresting... have you tried using simple-burner? what about real-time transfer? perhaps it has something to do with the encoding?
-
I couldn't tell the difference. although, i wasn't expecting any...

I read somewhere on these forums that a key bit of data is recorded elsewhere on the disc (an area which we cannot see in windows). it's possible that this area (if it exists) contains the file header or some other important bit of information... Rombusters, i think the toc is contained within an index file in the HMDHIFI folder... can't remember (and can't be bothered checking) but am pretty sure I saw it somewhere... lol, if someone made a "clone-md" software, that would be cool... wonder if it would have a sheep logo? ;-)

while true sp mode does not equal cd quality, I can't tell the difference and need more expensive equipment (headphones and system) to do so... even then, I doubt one can notice the difference without abxing

Unfortunately, there is no way that i know of which will allow you to transfer the songs quicker than realtime :-( Sony restricts every transfer (even analogue recordings may only be transfered once to a computer with a hi-md) My only advice is to back them up in real-time and make sure you back them up before transfering to the hi-md. Do not loose the backup because if you wish to make another copy, the same thing will happen.

hmmm, these mds are not in the hi-md format, am i right?

what bit rate are you using for the mp3's? is it variable?
-
whoa? that's even worse than (or equal to) telephone recordings (more like mobile phone recordings with bad reception!!!!) The IRiver would have been my choice as a hdd player, at least it can record at different bit-rates
