I thought long and hard about getting the NH1 over the 900. It came down to the battery configuration. I've used the AA battery compartment on my E55 a number of times. I didn't want a unit that didn't have that option. Also, I new I wanted at least the 900 because I loved the rechargeable battery of the E55. The 900 has the features I wanted, and the battery setup I was accustomed to. Also, I have had no problems with my 900 after several months of use. No quirks to report so far.

A changer with Hi-MD capability would be ideal to me as well. It would work very nicely with current and future Sony car decks. I also want a high quality component unit as well. It's a tough toss up for me on which one I'd rather have. I'd probably say the home deck. There is an adapter you can buy for Sony car decks that let's you plug in other devices (such as your Hi-MD unit) through Sony's Unilink system. If no car changer shows up soon, then it's an option I might look into. If they do come up with a car changer later for Hi-MD, then this unit can be used to hook up a second changer to the same head unit. Here's a link to Crutchfield's website about it. http://www.crutchfield.com/S-RiMwPACj6XI/c...300&cc=01&o=&a=

Two thoughts come to mind. One, the unit won't let you record in SP on a Hi-MD formatted disc (only PCM, Hi-SP, or Hi-LP). Two, if you use SonicStage to move record in SP, folks have said that SS converts it to LP2 before going to SP. That's not better sound quality at all. I haven't checked for myself yet, but I think you would get comparable sound quality between SP and Hi-SP based on what others have said here. Either way, I would suggest trying for yourself and seeing what works for you.

I have a Sanyo 1400 mAh gumstick I picked up in Germany last year, and it works great in my 900 and my E55. I've yet to use the one that came with the 900. I also haven't run the 900 long enough to figure out how long I'm getting out of this battery pack.

So if I transfer a track recorded in SS in Hi-SP to my MD unit and tell it to make it SP, SS changes it to LP2, then to SP? So, as long as I can live with LP2 quality (132k right?) then this is a good solution for making SP discs? I'll have to try that and see what I think. I think I'll decide it's better to record real time on my 930 when making SP discs for the car...

I don't know of any others that I've seen with a PS2 input other than the ones you mentioned. I love the keyboard functionality of my 930. It makes the entire operation of the unit easier, not just titling.

On the bottom of the charging cradle is a place to plug in the DC adapter. You still need the cradle, but you can plug the UK DC adapter into it. This way, it should work with your house electricity. Let me know if this is still confusing. I could take some pictures of what I'm talking about and email it to you if you'd like. As for the gumstick charger for your walkman, I'm not sure if it would work or not. You'd have to make sure the voltages were the same for both, and the size matched. I'm not sure about the NH-1. I've never seen the charging stand for one in person. Maybe an NH-1 owner would like to chime in.

That's an interesting tidbit of info. I'm going to have to compare those two as well. I still don't think anything records with as good of quality as my 930. But I'll have to see how it sounds with SS recording SP and Hi-SP discs.

I was using version 2.2 at the time. I'll have to see if I can tell a difference now that I'm up to 2.3.

I have a US model 900 and love it. I didn't really want the radio of the 800. I also liked the rechargeable battery option on the 900. I picked the 900 over the NH1 because of the ability to add the AA battery on the side of the unit when needed. I don't think either unit will be a bad choice. Just go with what fits your needs best.

I found these great plastic storage units you carry like a brief case. Got them at the container store a few years ago. I'm having the same problem that they don't fit the new larger cases. I was trying to figure out why they came out with them that size as well. It's as annoying as those Super Jewel cases SACDs have been coming in lately. They don't fit in CD holders, nor DVD holders. What's the deal?

What version of Total Recoreder is recommended for Hi-MD use? After reading what it does, I don't think I'll use it for anything but with my Hi-MD unit.

I missed that statement in the manual, I'll have to look at it. Every Sony charger I have ever dealt with automatically sensed when the battery was charged and turned to a trickle charge state. I know the wall charger from my E55 has a light that goes off when the battery is fully charged. It can take 3 hours for the light to go off when the battery started out very drained.

The NH-900 has a charging stand that plugs into a supplied DC adapter. It's a standard Sony DC 3V adapter that they use on their CD players and such. The current being fed to the unit for charging is 3V DC. You could even use a generic 3V DC power supply that has a tip of the right polarity and size. If you bought a US unit and wanted to use it in the UK, I would simply buy a DC adapter that accepts the UK voltage. You might be able to buy one from Sony Europe or get a generic one at an electronics store.

I'll have to give it a shot. Thanks for the answer.

This was my thought as well. However, I only recently got a computer capable of hooking my 900 up to for moving music. Before, I was recording with the digital input from my CD player. I have found (in the few comparisons I've done), that the tracks recorded in Hi-LP sound better when transferred from the computer than from the digital input. When I get some more time, I plan to play with this further. Right now, I've been spending my free time recording discs.

I haven't had much trouble finding them. A few months ago, I was ordering them from Sony, Crutchfield, and Minidisco. Now, they are sold at the Sony Style store in the mall, so I just pick them up when I'm there. I've never found each online place to be sold out at the same time. And they all sell them for the same price. Shipping varies by a dollar or two, so I suggest buying more than one when you find a place that does.

Mine does this as well and seems to be charging the battery just fine. The amount of time it's displayed seems to vary with how much charging is needed. However, I can't say I've ever watched continuously looking for that. I've got a charger that came with my E55 that I use most of the time, since I have two packs now.

That's a good suggestion. Are people able to manage with just one 1 GB disc? I bought 10 of them when I got my unit, and I'm thinking of picking some more up from the store next week.

I'll have to try this for myself. I do know the tracks I downloaded in LP2 don't sound as good as the tracks I ripped from CDs in Hi-LP. 128 kps would be nice for Hi-MD. I might try using LP2 on the 1GB disc and see how it works.

What is Total Recorder? I haven't heard of it before.

I certainly don't use all of its functionality, but that's more by choice than the software. I've played with iTunes, and I wouldn't use it either. I have no desire to keep music stored on my computer's hard drive. It's got plenty of room, but I just don't see the point. I have large CD changers that hold my CDs, and I simply use the computer to transfer music to MD for listening in the car and at work. I just storing music compressed on a computer is a waste.

I agree that the Hi-SP and Hi-LP difference was very noticable. When I first got my 900, I compared the PCM, Hi-SP, and Hi-LP recordings, and the Hi-LP wasn't as bad as I expected. But that's because I wasn't expecting much. My initial guess was for sound quality worse than a 128 kps MP3, so I was pleasantly surprised to hear it sounded about the same. Needless to say, MP3 sound has always been poor to me. I only have a couple of discs recorded in Hi-LP and those are ones I listen to at work for background music. Turning the volume up any reminds me how bad they sound. Hi-LP recordings are also useless for listening through a home system. I mostly stick with Hi-SP which sounds nearly as good as my old recordings on my 930.
