  1. I never cleaned any MD (deck, player, recorder) I owned in the past, but when you encounter such a problem with an almost none used unit you start to think. OK my den is a messy one. My wife refuses to enter unless I let the cleaning lady first. I am starting to get suspicious about my beautiful Sharp ST501 which I deserted 5 years ago, now sitting in one of my drawers. I'll see if blowing resolves its read error problems. I think not, and I've already lost its remote anyway.
  2. I thought since it was sitting on a bookshelf for more than a year, and since compared to previous models the inside of the unit was quite vulnerable to dust (you can see the battery), I just gave it a heavy blow, now the noise is gone and it reads every MD. The 2d unit already came to my US adress. My ignorance cost me $329. Anyway I wont use the 2d one until this one really dies on me. I am happy as a puppy! BTW I will clean the lazer head, do we do it as we clean a CD player?
  3. I am now using my old NH1... God this one is slow! I had forgotten how slow it was. I will transfer all my music on my computers, will deplete all my virgin MD's and I will say goodbye to transfering to MD's. I will only use it for live recordings. I suddenly realized that I was not carrying MD anymore. Mostly using Cowon D2 or Archos 605 instead. And YES I confess I also have a Iphone... couldnt resist. Even though I am a Mac hater!
  4. I hardly used my RH1. Transfered my old recordings to PC... and I hadnt been using it for more than a year. Last week I wanted to make a live recording, but there were this noise coming from it. I stopped it and inserted another MD thinking there may be a problem with the disc. Then with other discs it started to report read error. I connected it to my PC and it managed to read some of the discs, but with a nasty noise coming out of it. Today I tried again (Ihad taken the battery out for a week) with a fresh 1Gb MD... and no hope. It tries, there is this sound of the head with some rattling noise. What do I do? I am really surprised to see it broken like that with so little use. I had many MD recorders/players, Sony, Sharp, Aiwa... some of them stopped working after 4-5 years of heavy use. What is wrong with this one? Update: After trying some 6-7 minutes it managed to read an old 1Gb disc, but Sonicstage says, I have to reinitialize this disc because it was recorded by some other software, haha! It went really crazy this time. Windows explorer opens the folder, there is stuff transfered 2 years ago. I took off the disc and inserted into my Onkyo deck, it works. Now reinserted again into the RH1.... its been 4 minutes, and still waiting. I ordered another RH1 to Minidisco, at least I will have spare parts for the years to come. I invested too much on MD, hundreds of discs, decks, etc. I am not giving up yet.
  5. Using SS4.0CP. I hadnt transfered anything to my RH1 or NH1 for some time. Today I wanted to transfer 1 of my new CD's. It couldnt transfer anything to my RH1. I thought maybe the disk was defective (deletes well the tracks). Then I tried my old NH1: same results. I tried my new ASUS notebook but funny ASUS couldnt give a drive number to RH1 (Can someone also explain this? Drive no. should had been given automatically, no?)At the end I could transfer that CD on my older Toshiba notebook. So there is no problem with RH1, NH1 or the Hi-MD disk itself. Then there is a problem with my desktop PC. I recently installed IE7 and WMP11... and I have changed the mainboard, RAMs etc... but still using my old windowsXP configuration. SS has a huge database and I cannot transfer anything old or newly ripped. Any answers would be appreciated.
  6. I tried to read this thread completely... sorry if that is already mentioned. MDfreak you are the only one in possession of a RH1. We understand that this gem is able to record in old SP amd MDLP as was NH1. What about the new bitrates? Could you transfer tracks encoded other than 64, 192 and 256? What about atrac lossless?
  7. I have already uploaded it to my w800i watching right now. Better than watching on a high res display.
  8. When you put a DVD or a CD writer in an USB 2.0 enclosure and a HD to another USB 2.0 enclosure the HD transfer rates will always be higher than the DVD-CDRW's, no? I think Sony found a new way to spin the MD faster... maybe a new design? Who knows.
  9. I will be in France next June, which means I am going to buy 2 black RH1... I wish Sony had released a BLUE one. Like my old Sharp ST-501. My only problem will be to find a hack for the sound limitation. I never had this problem before, because all my units were bought from either Japan or the US. Bot one black and one blue would be perfect.
  10. Since RH10 had a large display, a non display remote was perhaps reasonable. I couldnt live with a non display remote with my NH1, here again with its single line display I dont think Sony will pack a non display remote with RH1, unless they think that this is only a pro/field recording unit, and not for playback.
  11. I dont understand why people are still complaining about the battery life. Think of those sucking Ipods. They somehow managed to get a 10-12 houts life. For years they supplied juice for 8 hours. Constant battery problems and you had (have) to send them back for battery replacements. 9 hours of non stop recording! what do you want more? God's wrath? Get a spare battery. Over the years I had more than 10 recorders/players (Sharp and Sony) and I have never used AA battery pack. They become bulky and I dont like the look with that attached.
  12. Thanx Ishi, I was just going to ask for it. Great and swift work
  13. That is the nicest news I have heard for some time. I am going to buy 2 of these. 2 Black ones, in case Sony is really decisive on ending the MD format. I have more than 200 MD's recorded in SP with my old MDS-JA50ES... now I will be able to upload them to my PC! Now I am really sorry that I had deleted some of my SP's to record MDLP. That is a dream come true. Thanx Sony! I remember the days I had to use SCMS stripper. Was it SCMS? Anyway serial copy I mean... With all that enthusiasm, and those new features I think MD has a future. Too many people may start using it. Why do you think Sony changed its mind? Maybe because NW series HD players and Connect software sucked? I am going to start stocking more 1GB discs. I am happy now!
  14. I hope they read... how many times we have asked for a Hi-MD deck.
  15. I am glad that I have bought a spare one. I was thinking of selling it, since my son didnt want to use it with his NW-HD1. Now it is time to unwrap it.
  16. no classical listeners here... I am listening to Vivaldi's recently discovered and released opera Motezuma
  17. I have used many Denon's in the past. CD players: 3560, 2560, 3000, and amplifiers PM1560, and monoblock power amplifiers. Then I had switched to Marantz. I still keep my old Ken Ishiwata signed CD player. Then with Home Theatrer I used Yamaha and I didnt like its musicality. Apart being a good HT amplifier Denon 3806 souds awesome while playing SACD's and CD's. I hope you get one soon.
  18. I am a classical music listener and I dont download music from usenet or elsewhere unless it is in flac format. I generally convert them to ATRAC then. Not directly of course as you would know.
  19. I would buy anything... but please Lord (here SONY)LET THERE BE A Hi-MD DECK
  20. I think us MD freaks also are a bit guilty... We (not me) kept on asking for mp3 format. Who cares mp3. There's lot of cheap, crappy mp3 players around. I loved ATRAC from the begining. I love its clearity... MD is ATRAC, and we ignored that. I dont think SONY murmured: "THEN THERE WILL BE NO MORE MD".... still I feel guilty on our behalf.
  21. Though I am mad at SONY, I must admit that is really a farewel with grace. I still dont want to believe that this will be the last of the MD's. I remember now the firs MZR1 that I had seen on a shopping window. Another pity: With HiMD the format had been matured. I dont understand why Sony cared for more R&D for a format to be buried. I think HiMD will still have a great place as a seperate deck in a HIFI system. We still need a component to replace cassette decks. MD was serving for this, and still can. No one uses DVDRW's for recording and erasing music. They are mainly for video, and no portability. Think twice SONY! I will go on buying any MD you release. I beg you, dont leave us orphans. I wasnt that mad when you buried DAT, but MD is different. It still have much chance to go on.
  22. No Denon Link unfortunately. I am using Ext. In 5+1. Probably next month when I'll gather more resources I will go for a 3910. Even 2910 doesnt have a DLink. Still 1920 is a fairly good player.
  23. My last acquisitions are Denon a receiver 3806 and a Denon DVD/SACD player 1920... and lots of SACD's.... and a new 250Gig. SATA HD in a Enermax enclosure to achieve at last the terrabyte limit in all. I was having difficulty in storing the movies.... and a Kenwood Espresso machine to replace my old Krups.

    New Hi MD Model?

Onkyo decks are first gen. and they dont have a USB port, so you have to use your portable to tranfser music from your PC. I dont care for a car HiMD unit, since I dont drive and I dont even have a permit. Just use a casette adapter. The deck from SONY is a must IMO.
