Petition to sony asking for WMP update firmware for walkman users!
doomlordis replied to veggiemusician's question in Audio
Sony Has not said it will stop updating Sonicstage, if MS release something that screws it Sony will patch it, they have to because if they dont then all the minidisc users and HD1 users will be up in arms. -
I AM NOT HOSTING THIS, BUT ENJOY http://www.partizan.com/partizan/v.php/roz..._air_sony_rolly

How transfering my files from my old HD3 to my new HD5?
doomlordis replied to matt79's question in Audio
You wont be able to do it with sonicstage at all, period. i would look into the sony plugin for winamp, its called sony_ml i think, you may be able to move your files that way see here http://www.atraclife.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=1623 -
Its simple, standard usb , magnesium construction ala hd1, monochrome screen , no videos , no photos , high capacity 20gb upwards , true lossless playback , line out , no touch controls - simple joystick or button arrangement is better , high quality DAC - burr brown / crystal etc , high output volume - i can protect my own ears. Iaudio were on the right track with the X5. Sony were on the right track with the HD1, HD3 was a mistake imo.

no - playlists on player

It has settings for brightness and contrast, i have to say that the screen , oled or not is very good. I had a listen to a s705 today , i was offered it for £60 , i tried it with my ksc75s and the included noise cancelling phones, i hate to say it but i detected some hiss with or without noise cancelling and the E series is a little louder - i didnt buy it.

Weird, looking at it i think its an lcd. Weird they cant get it right! I love this player , i performed an experiment yesterday and the result was surprising. Most of my music is 320kbps Lame MP3 , so i cant get a lot on a 2gb player, yesterday i converted my tunes on transfer to Atrac3+ 96kbps, wasnt expecting to find it acceptable but it is fine for portable use!!! Through my KSC75s the difference is very hard to spot on some tunes whilst others it is more noticable, mainly a slight loss of detail and minor pre-echo. I will be using 96kbps from now on , i tried 64kbps but the pre-echo is much more noticable, i now get about 720 songs on the player.

Its LCD im afraid... "The 3 line colour LCD display makes navigating the menu a breeze. Album jackets are displayed on the colour screen or you can search by artist, album, genre or recent transfer. Fine tune the music experience with the 5 Band equalizer (Heavy/Pop/Jazz/Unique/Custom)" From Sonys desription.

Had a bit longer with it now, this is a great release from Sony , its sound quality is excellent, its cheap and doesnt look cheap at all. The menu system is a little slow to scroll but thats the only negative i can really find. The clear audio options are hit and miss, the L/R seperation option doesnt to these ears make any difference at all but the clear bass option is very good increasing the warmth of the tracks without distortion. The screen is easily readable outside and in direct sunlight, probably due to LCD rather than OLED. I like it so much i may upgrade to E016F when its available here!

Ok so i had asked about euro volume limits on these players ..... no answer. So i bought one. Quick Impressions : Build is solid , no buttons on front so no dust issues! NO HISS AT ALL!!! tested with Ksc75, ed21lp and e2cs , none, not a jot - well done Sony. NO EURO VOLUME LIMITS!!! This is as loud as my e005 at full when set to 20/30 - result, it can drive ksc75s no problem, my e005 struggled. Sound quality is excellent , i have tested against my Iaudio X5 , i swear they are evenly matched. Navigation is a little slow , scrolling through tracks could be faster. The jacket search is cool , as well as seeing the covers it plays random parts of tracks and not from the start of the track , it can be halfway through, makes identifying the artist easier. The screen is bright and clear , not an oled but nice all the same. Its great value , my 2gb (without radio) cost £65 , a bargain in my eyes.

I have noticed that the European instructions for this player list the output at 5mw + 5mw, previous players gave no figures, does this mean no volume limit?

Back to topic, i have owned in order - nw-ms9 / 11 , nw-ms70d , nw-a608, nw-e005 , the older models ms9/11 and ms70d have a lower noise floor than the new models, i cant detect much hiss on my ms70d , it is there but is undetectable with all my headphones except e4c , the newer models have a very noticable hiss ,just switch it on and listen, even with stock buds you can hear it. I think it may be to do with the screens or just poor components/build. If you want a zero noise floor buy a MZ-RH1 minidisc player , it is silent, they put in a high capacity coupling condenser to filter switching feedback from the digital amp and it works perfectly.

Had this for the weekend (mate let me test it out!). Build quality is excellent , nice drop in cd slot on top and buttons are all solid. The speakers are nice , they dont have a removable front like the U1BT version though. I wanted to try this as i have a HD5 hardfrive mp3 player and this unit supports atrac ad with a usb port on the front. THIS FUNCTION IS BRILLIANT!!!!!! The screen on this unit is big , i can read artist and track names from 14ft away , when you plug in the HD5 the U1 starts to read the database from it, i have 18gb music and it took about 20 seconds. You can then bowse by artist, album or group. It also charges the HD5 whilst plugged in. The sound quality is very good , the detail is there , bass is well rounded and the highs are tight and not splashy. It lacks a little in dynamics but this improved when listening to CDs. FM reception was very good. All in all if you own a Sony mp3 (a series, e series, or hd5 (not hd1 or hd3)) this is a great solution for having all your music at hand. PS MZ-RH1 does not work with USB.

I have quite a lot of Sony products and i have had at one point owned almost all of their daps, my favourite was the ms70d, beautiful design , simple to use and had massive "i want it factor". In my opinion that is what is missing from the current range. The glass (read plastic) fronted players , e series, a series etc are in my opinion badly designed. The OLED is practically unreadable in normal daylight , they look like makeup , e series = lipstick , a series = compact. I wish they would make all metal audio players again, look at the MZ-NH1 Hi-MD player, beautiful design. I own a few Hi-MD players and Sonys design team does much better with these. Sonicstage has a bad rep, game over. Doesnt matter that it is actually easy to use now in its CP form, horse bolted , people are scared of it. PS3 could spell the end for Sony , massive investment in a product that has massive potential but is crippled by the RRP, Nintendos wii may be the final nail in the PS3s coffin. I know at least 4 people who have decided to get a wii at xmas rather than wait 4 months and pay £250 more. Sony will never drop music and movie business , it is far too lucrative, one big movie hit can earn them more than a new dap could. I wish them well , i would love to see Walkman over Ipod but that will not happen until Ipod becomes uncool.

Sounds like your a. ID3 tagging is messed up b. your track numbers are all wrong. When i transfer my stuff it stays in the order i have it in in sonicstage. ie. it will come as artist - white stripes - album - elephant songs - in track order. The other thing to check is that you set sort to album , if you set it to artist when you folder shuffle it will include all songs by that artist in the shuffle. -

I havent used a bean but i find this easier than the 608 to navigate , the button placement makes it quicker and one handed use it simple. To find a song first you hold the menu button, then scroll (using the rocker on the side)to the magnifying glass symbol and select using play button(play is select in all menus), this will then display artist, album , all songs. you scroll through these with the rocker and select ,then you just scroll through the titles and select the one you want - artist then displays album then songs. It sounds a bit long winded but it is really quick with the button placement , i have added a little pic to demonstrate (forgive my artistic talent or lack of!) -

Nice to see some decent accessories for Sony walkmans, i found these on the portugese sony site, i especially like the fact you can buy a case that comes with 3 new caps! http://www.sony.pt/view/ShowProduct.action...Network+Walkman I also like the name, forget the e00* these are WALKMAN@FLASH, I think Sony are finally getting wise and hopefully this is a sign of smarter marketing and a more coherent product line. -

The battery life seems really good , i used it 3 hours a day roughly with atrac3+ 128 for a week (5 days) and it only dropped to 3/4! I love this more and more, it does let in dust at the top around the buttons though, i have 3 tiny white dots under my screen. The button set up is far far better than my 608, just makes more sense having the scroller on the side of the unit. The unit isnt that loud, ex71s are not loud enough for me with this (or the 608) but cx300, ep630 and ed21lp are fine, as are my px200s. I think Sony have scored a goal with this one, everyone who sees it wants one! -

Could not be bothered converting my mp3s into a new atrac bitrate, i have done it with a couple of songs now - result 192 atrac sounds warmer than 192 mp3 (ripped from cd), i have always found that atrac has a richness that is missing from mp3s which in comparison can sound a little metallic and harsh. -

Just a small update, volume is actually the same as the 608, normalizer works well - some of my mp3s were low volume and they seem to be playing back at the same volume as the others! It is an all plastic design but doesnt feel cheap, it is super light and easier to navigate than my 608 , volume buttons are on the back along with hold. I will post photos and a review later this weekend. -
Sonycentres in uk have them today for sale (shelves on Monday!). So far like it A LOT, have a a608 and always thought it was too big, the e005 feels a LOT smaller. It is easy to navigate and has a Normalizer! Still testing it but so far very impressed. PS seems louder than my a608. PPS manual refers to a e005f radio 2gb version! <HR noShade SIZE=1> E005B Review Pictures: Sound Quality The most important in my opinion, the E005B doesnt disappoint , i tested it with atrac3+ 64 and 256 , MP3 192 and 128 (lame). The MP3 at 192 sounded very good but lacked bass compared with the Atrac at 256. 64 atrac was surpisingly good with a rich bassy sound and i preffered it to the 128 mp3. Overall very good. Navigation Navigation has changed a bit from the 608, this i suspect is due to the one line oled. Now when you press the Display button it switches between either artist/song or Album/song depending on settings in the menu. Holding display button brings up the menu, it is made up of four icons, music, playlists, settings and search. Music takes you back to the now playing screen, playlist button does nothing on mine as i have not imported any playlists yet. Settings allows you to change settings for Sound, display, play mode, sports timer(sets music to switch off after x minutes), sort - weird one this , it sorts tunes into either artist or album order so if in artist order all the artists songs would play in alphabetical order, in album they would be in album order. Search does what it says on the tin, search by artist , album or song. In sounds you can set the custom 5 band equalizer , volume mode - preset or manual, avls (why bother?) ,beep and normalizer , this last thing is the biggest improvement over the 608 , it trys to equalize the volume between tracks and actually does a great job, sure some tunes are just too quiet to fix but it does lessen the difference with these ones to. Overall the button placements on this unit is well thought out and very easy to use after a few minutes. Build Quality Plastic but solid and very light, we will still get dust under the plastic but overall i think the weight reduction is well worth the change to plastic. THE CAP , i was worried but it feels tight when attached and i dont think it will fall off , it actually feels like (not sure if it is or not) it is attached with a magnet whitch is nice. Earphones These aint that bad (better than ipod stocks) dont fit my ears but my wife likes them! PROS great sound easy navigation tiny size plugs straight in nice screen cheap BAD Box is annying plastic that has to be cut to open Thats about it OVERALL My favourite Sony mp3 ever , The HD1 is the best looking but this is the best player.
