Have a Hi-MD question that doesn't need a thread? [part III]
greenmachine replied to Christopher's topic in Minidisc
Is there a way to get SS to recognize the Hi-MD machine without having to install all the microsuck bloatware (a.k.a. update/servicepack)? Call me ignorant, but my disk space is limited. I'm running XP. -
Looking To Upgrade, Don't Know Where To Begin
greenmachine replied to lunatic's topic in Live Recording
Sounds unusual that your battery box drains the battery quickly. Usually average miniature microphones consume less than 1 mA current. What kind of battery does it use? Do you unplug the mic from the box after usage or is there a power switch? A battery box is still very useful for recording loud sounds such as drums from a close distance because you can use the line-in of the recorder instead of the mic-in, which would overload soon (->clipping). It's a rumor that powering the mics from the mic-in ('plug-in power') will affect the recorder's battery life noticeable by the way. -
Why is it that addictive chemicals are controlled by the government, but addictive activities are not? It's important to understand that it's your life and depends entirely upon you where you set your priorities. If MDCF are more important for you at the moment than your study then it be so. Interests change with time. Being useful means to serve others' interests. Don't be a slave all your life. Think free - act free. Amen

Need bass roll-off for a hearing-assistance system

I'd be interested to see it's inner life as well, please share your results with us. Maybe a moderator could split the thread, it's indeed pretty much off-topic. -

Need bass roll-off for a hearing-assistance system
greenmachine replied to Gweeble's topic in Live Recording
All you need for a first order filter is one capacitor for each channel connected in series to the microphone. The cutoff frequency fc of a first order low pass is given by fc = 1 / (2 * Pi * R * C) If you rearrange the formula you can calculate C C = 1 / (2 * Pi * R * fc) Assuming that fc should be 150Hz and the mic input impedance is 10000 Ohm, your cap would have to have about 0.1061 µF. But the problem would be that you block the dc bias voltage from the recorder when using a capacitor in series. Thus the microphones need to be powered separately when you want to use such a filter (as your Sony mic is). This microphone powering scheme is often called a 'battery box'. By using the calculated capacitance, you set the desired roll-off frequency. 2.2 µF is a commonly used value for a non-audible roll-off (approx. 7 Hz, 10 kOhm mic-in impedance). There are several practical instructions floating around in the net how to materialize such a thing but with some experience and imagination you won't need any. -
thank you for this

Adjusting Levels, Recording / Post-process
greenmachine replied to himd_user's topic in Live Recording
I consider Audition's RMS histogram to be very interesting: The first graph shows a very loud, dynamically highly compressed heavy metal track, the second relaxed pop music. Note the difference in the dB scale. [attachmentid=403][attachmentid=404] -
Indeed, happy b-day cordu, happy b-day roy.

What i have noticed when comparing LP4 and Hi-LP was a quite excessive collapse of the stereo image (channel narrowing) with LP4. Hi-LP's low pass seems to work less aggressive, but at the expense of introducing more artifacts (metallic ringing). I'm not sure which one of these compression methods i prefer, the quality loss is far too obvious for both. Did anyone else compare them side by side?

It's not about love and hate, it's about profitability. Money rules the world.
-
I had the impression that A440 felt offended by my neverending curiosity.
-
Not to attack you, but... how do you know it's not the mics' self noise that you were hearing?
-
The problem is that i don't have any.
-
That's somewhat oversimplified, i've tried to explain the effect of different filter orders here. Bass roll-off filters are first order filters. There is no gap between the lowest mic-in and the highest line-in setting (as i was trying to show in this graph), so why should it be 'quieter'? All you have to do is to find a suitable level setting.
-
I'd say exactly the opposite: If you have high quality material to start with, you'll hear far more degradation than from a lo-fi source. C'mon, you're not serious, are you? Mp3 may perform bad at very low bitrates, but from 128k upwards it beats Atrac's arse.

4. Never use the BoB at or close to zero gain.

Or in Audition / CoolEdit: -Effects->Amplitude->Channel Mixer... But it would be much more convenient if you could find such a cable IMO...
