Good suggestion. Only one slight problem in my case. I'm using my Presario laptop and it has possibly the world's worst soundcard when it comes to recording a line in. I guess this is what you should expect from a laptop! If I was to use any standard would the soundcard be preferable to my original setup? I had ordered a Santa Cruz s/c from my desktop at home but good ol' Dell didn't build it in. Not really willing to buy any new hardware for this...so what's preferable? Are many of today's cheaper desktops fitted with onboard sound for cheapness?

I had used minidisc.org on and off before, but getting closer to buying a new Hi-MD made me scour the forums for a while lurking, then I built up my questions! Great resource.

Ok I know you can't upload from a NetMD recorded source via SS... But can I simply get a gold-plated (!) analog wire and play from an old MD player into my Hi-MD via analog again, and then upload THAT version. Is this being stupid regarding quality loss? I would *like* to use my SP MD deck to play directly into the Hi-MD via optical but it's broken atm and I can't afford the repair Any comments?

I'm having the same problem with specific mp3 files that I didn't rip (they're large 192 DJ mixes). Foobar recognises them and the br, and even after adding file info. I either get a 0% imported box that just sits there or else a nameless track is added that can be played in SS but can't be transcoded. Any ideas? TIA.

Get the number of your nearest official repair (I got mine via Sony) and ring them in advance with as much details as possible...Should be able to give you a rough idea of a quote or at least the min. to look at the machine. From there you could make an informed decision.

It's relatively light (although feels sturdier than the AA battery case) and made from hard plastic. Myself, I wouldn't trying modding it - just asking to get a broken stand for the sake of something minor once you get used to it.

Would it help if you used the full download of SS 3.1 from the Downloads section? I had a problem when upgrading but tried it again (with online installer) and it seemed to work fine. http://forums.minidisc.org/downloads/details.php?file=21 (I presume I can link directly to this?) I close all other draining aps when using SS...seems easier not to give it an excuse!

Best I can find is http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?act=A...type=post&id=77 and http://www.lordpercy.com/sony_mz-dh10p_review.htm. Your right though there seems to be a lack of reviews, at least at first glance.

Oh! They really do hide the 3V socket inside the stand. Excellent. I'm loving it so far, and SS has behaved itself. I'm sure there's plenty of woe to come but right now I'm chuffed. Thanks again guys.

I'd just like to thank you all for your help (especially Ishiyoshi & Volta) in getting my RH10. It has just arrived (5 days from Japan) and looks sweet. Bought from sunnylife_jp again, seems like a great seller. Came with adaptor as promised but found my existing 3V 3-Pin charger works perfectly. Initial play on SP sounds great with the E2c's (it should!). It's very stylish, but I can see the potential for damage easily. The bag seems v. good for that. I'm really happy with my Japanese (black) remote, but I'm a bit miffed at the stand - I know this was mentioned before - but only after getting it...What's the story with using it?! If you can't charge it by plug or connect via USB when it's sitting in there (the wall is slightly too high) then I don't see the point. Am I missing something? I'll have some fun playing around with it later. Pity I didn't order 1 Hi-MD with the Recorder because my seperate order isn't here yet...it's only a few dollars more than the cheapest around. I can't wait (!) to install SS. Thanks again. Proud owner of black RH10 .

Oops double post. My mistake. Don't see a delete option in edit.

Great stuff thanks guys!

What about http://www.minidisc-canada.com/shopdisplay...t=Blank+Hi%2DMD? CAD: $8.99 each. Fairdeal has a fairly decent price alright, thanks for the link. I've also found some on sale that are due to be in in 2 days - http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=home...ase_pid/244753/. Hope that helps.

No actually! Thanks for the link. I just ordered some from Minidisc Australia via eBay...they have varied prices according to their market so it pays to shop around. They've 99.9% feedback and the negative isn't really, so I went ahead and ordered some. I'll post back how I get on. I ordered to Europe by the way.
-
Right well let us know if you find anywhere! Thanks again V.

Also to ask... Where exactly can I buy Hi-MDs?! Planetminidisc and minidisco are out of stock (same company I guess)...and although eBay has plenty, I'd appreciate any recommendation you could give. Even if it was just a trusted eBay seller. I'm in Europe but can order to the States this month too. Thanks!

No worries, that's pretty understandable. Good! I'd prefer to not have to monitor each recording. Bad! I was probably being presumptious but lets hope someone makes a converter (I won't hold my breath!) Mmm...I actually do have an optical out on my MJS unit, but it seems to be 'breaking disks' on me so I'd kind of given up on it. I guess I should start saving for a repair. It's hard to narrow down the cuprit machine but I'm pretty sure it's that. Thanks a lot for the replies.

Hi there, Thanks to your help my RH10 has been shipped today. So now onto the next step! Here's the scenario: I have a sizeable portion of old mp3s that I don't have better quality versions of. I also have a range of CDs ready to rip in good quality, as well as some FLAC files. I have a very large quantity of original 74/80 disks, many of which contain my only copy of albums I like (all SP). All of this is listened to with Shure E2cs so I want to do this right. What to do? 1) When I get my Hi-MD I have no choice but to use the mp3s above, but is it fully established that converting them is the best option, despite the fact you're compressing them further? 2) Are the CDs better off ripped straight with simple burner or recorded slowly via optical? Is that a stupid question to even ask?! Maybe this is hard to recommend, but KJ_Palmer advised Hi-SP format (256kbps) in his previous helpful reply. I def. don't wanna use PCM or v. low quality. Would anyone else suggest another? I'm planning to use plenty of my original MDs to expand them...especially as finding Hi-MDs seems to be difficult! 4) Is there a FLAC to ATRAC converter? I'm buying music in FLAC these days specifically so I can change it other formats as the need arises. 5) The old MDs...now this is the tough one. Even if they're recorded in analog (very few) I don't have much scope do I? i.e. Impossible to play from an old MD player into the RH10 via an optical cable. Does that mean I have to record via Audacity (etc.), burn as wav and then encode as ATRAC? Am I missing something here? Even if I was to get the Chaintech AV-710 (in which case I'll have to borrow a desktop!) it doesn't have everything I'd need. Thanks in advance for any help you could give.

My Hi-MD Walkman MZ-RH10 | Blue Pictorial
bri replied to Ishiyoshi's topic in Product Reviews/Pictorials
Sorry could you clarify what you mean here exactly? What would be the difference if you bought a Japanese version on eBay that came with an adaptor, or if you bought the part later and got an adaptor yourself? It's probably really obvious but hey! Thanks! -
Thanks, I figure this is a minor annoyance that probably won't crop up much if at all. Ok so, I'll have to read up on 'fake' SP I guess! I have thought one major use is the ability to transfer old real SP disks (esp. analog recordings) straight onto Hi-MD via optical (or line when necessary). Presumably this won't lead much loss in quality, esp. for the analog recordings tranferred digitally. I'd def. agree with you here and keep the G750 for this and other things. 3. Hi-SP format (256kbps) is probably best for you: 8 hours on a 1GB disc or 2:20 hours on an 80 min blank. I'd recommend just going direct from CD to Hi-SP via Simpleburner, unless you really want to store them on your PC hard drive. Not sure if there's a FLAC to ATRAC converter either... I was hoping you wouldn't say this... Presumably if I buy an FM tranmitter (given all the flaws involved) I'll be plugging it into the headphone socket and it's probably the cheapest way for me to be able to listen to certain tracks in the car that arn't backwards compatible/saves me time. Yeah they seem even cheap here in Dublin (rip-off central) in high-street shops. Did some more reading and apparantly they're an improvement on the NiCd battery I have. This for me is a big issue. Talking to a friend who bought an American N10, he had to pay 75eu to get a working adaptor. I'm really out of my depth here but previous experience in N.America has led me to believe that Euro models used in the U.S. don't often get enough to charge, whereas U.S. models used here are overcharged. This is a major scare-factor for me, and at the moment I'll be buying a 60eu+ more expensive version on amazon as opposed to planetminidisc unless someone is willing to reassure me on this. Let's hope! Thanks again for all the help everyone (you too volta). If anyone has any experience with buying U.S. models to use in Europe please let me know ASAP!

Hi there, Long time lurker - thanks for all the tips I've picked up already. I'm about to buy an RH10 but have some (unsurprising) reservations/questions about this model. I know it has plenty of flaws but it's the usual catch with waiting for the next improvement (esp. with Sony!), so I need to get either this or HD player and I prefer Hi-MD. It should be noted that my last portable purchase was the Sony MZ-G750 so I'm a long way behind things. I have a lot of original 74/80 min SP MDs, and I like(d) the option of recording from line in to SP. Another big aspect was 100% gapless play yet with trackmarks. It's this sort of thing (along with battery life) that is keeping me buying this over any HD player. I'd be vaguely tempted by the NW-HD5 but probably not enough. I would really appreciate some clarifications...although I've done plenty of reading I'm finding my mind a little fried at this stage and I'm confusing myself! Anyway, could you advise me on the following please: - The seller has informed me the that the RH10s they sell dont contain ALL the letters and characters, for adding track names on the device itself. Planetminidisc say it isn't a problem as teh characters appear in the name just not when inputting. Is this correct? -I will not be able to record in original SP mode, say from my decks and mixer and go and play a 74min disk in my car (I have something like the mdx_c670 - 5 years old anyway so no MDLP play - let alone Hi-MD!) - correct? I know it's been discussed here, but I'm a little confused as to my options. Keep the G750 for recording myself to listen in the car, but rip all CDs to the computer and then download them via SS? Buy a FM tranmitter for the car and use all old MDs in their expanded form? Do people regard the optical input as totally obsolete, or would you recommend recording from Hi-fi to Hi-MD using the optical cable over ripping and then SS? -By ripping my CDs to FLAC format I can get SS to simply convert to ATRAC/plus and I'll be enjoying my music in a reasonably good quality? I don't want to use mp3s at 128kpbs, and I've no experience of the ATRACplus format. I use mp3s at 192vbr when necessary, but generally try to use FLAC. What bitrate would you recommend (I can live with less than 30+hrs on 1 disk!) -There is no Line Out on this unit; where does that leave me? If it has no noise restriction or is hacked can I simply put a cable into the headphone socket and play into other devices...I'm no expert but I thought headphones were pre-amplified and line outs were not, which could lead to heavy distortion if you plugged it into something like a mixer via the headphone socket? -Treating the NiMH battery ok; is it like a laptop battery that needs a full charge, then a full usage, then a full charge - or it will lose capacity quickly, or is it as robust as my G750 one which has never been changed and lasts for ages (can't remember the type; round sony AA style but called Ni__ something). This is removable and cheap to replace right?! -I'm about to buy this in the states to play back in Ireland, and I'm concerned about permanently using an adapter to bring it into 3-pin sockets. Will I end up with this unearthed problem like here? Does anyone have any experience at using their RH10 like this? I know people who have bought different players (from eBay etc.) and this never came up. Maybe I'm worrying too much. -Finally, can Sony provide firmware updates on the web for d/l to your machine, or does it require the player to be shipped in to them? I would have thought it was the former but I'm getting a different impression from some posts. Thank you very much in advance.
